They said the same thing about leashes when they came out. Now everybody uses one. I'd happily jump on that ski instead of paddling out through what I saw there yesterday. Another thing is that they weren't towing in, they were doing step offs.

By the way, go look at Brett Barley's sequence on Surfline today. There was definitely some size to it.

I know Losttsol, i'm not hating on them, just giving ole Peglegs a hard time, and he knows why. I got no beef with those dudes on skis (as long as they don't endanger others), although i'd personally paddle out (not on my SUP) and take my chances, I've been in much tougher conditions and wouldn't even consider a ski, but to it's their own...

I'd bet $ that Brett paddled into that one too.

Completely agree with SKegLegs about shifty currents and small takeoff zones

I don't see the big deal, looks fun to me, 5-6ft and shifty, sounds like a lot of days we get each year

Hey Skeglegs, about a year ago my friend and I got down to Rodanthe just as a strong nor'easter was blowing in...we headed down to Frisco and found 8' freight train barrels. I paddled out, yes I drifted down about 1 mile or more and only caught a couple waves. Later, we watched guys getting rides on ski's into 'em. While I will say it looked like a lot fun, I still don't believe there is a need to use a ski here on the east, except for some rare occasions.

Say what you will, but I'll never have as much respect for someone who uses a ski to ride waves as much as someone who paddles out.

    Just my $.02.

Agreed but just reiterating the point that if surfing was my full time job, I would have a jetski and maximize my wave/barrel count. Obviously I would have paddled those waves like the rest but no point in hating on people who do step offs. My respect for them does not drop because they use skis.

Yeah, I know i see Mick & Bruce out surfing the east coast all the time.
Hey, I'm not hating on anyone, to it's their own...
It's like steroids in baseball, you get an asterick.

Oh, and here, I'll quote your article, so you can have a better idea why I think it's retarded that their out there with ski's

"Nah, it was bloody way bigger than that! I saw a 25-foot wave come through, if not bigger. It doesn’t do it justice on the telecast. Reed McIntosh got like a solid 20-footer, it could have been bigger, I don’t know. It was just massive!"

I think you are missing the point. Those guys who are using skis could surf those waves by paddling and surf them way better than you or I. However, they would have their fair share of closeouts and their wave count would suffer. I get your steroids reference and agree somewhat but will refute by saying those guys could surf without the skis which may or may not be the case with baseball and steroids.

No one starts surfing with skis. They shred, they get sponsored, sponsor gives them a ski, they get more barrels/pics, get stoked and repeat.

I'd use a ski in a heart beat. It's not a crutch, it's yet another way to enjoy the surf. Another for the quiver If
you will. No more of a crutch than a wax, trac pads, or a bigger board. Dig what you want but I think skis are badass.

I know you're being facetious but yeah that's the gist of it. I would rather paddle because the drop in is one of my favorite parts of surfing. Don't think it's ever OK to interfere with paddling surfers - more as an enabling tool in tricky/heavy conditions where paddling is not advisable (not necessarily the case yesterday).

Gaff what I meant to imply is that Brett was paddling, not towing.

Like using the swellinfo forums to consider yourself a surfer.

Oh boy this forum lol. I am getting a jet ski. Apparently you can aggregate the peanut gallery watching from the beach without even having to physically snake them.

No, more like using a jetski to consider yourself a surfer. If you need a ski to get into some HH, maybe a foot over head waves, then you don't need to be out there. I get it for places like Jaws and Chopes and other insane / deadly waves, but on the E. Coast in 5-6ft waves? "C'mon Man."
