I hardly ever change my Wax until it gets thick and black and gnarly, by then the wax starts kinda flaking off in the critical spots lol.

Then yeah, elbow grease during winter

I thought somebody would burn me on the "thick black and gnarly" thing but nobody bit on that either.

But to answer your question, I personally find that the presence of a tramp stamp allows for precision waxing.

Well past time to strip that old black wax off my boards. May have 5 lbs of build-up on my longboard!

Betty I hope it’s okay to pose this rookie question here. board technology...

I have a 6’2” poly board that is about a year old. I try not to leave boards in my car but it happens. Today it’s not too hot and parked in shade.

I got in to grab lunch and I can still smell that uncured glass smell. I have smelled it every time since I have had the board. I have never had a board that continued to smell like a shaping shack (like it never cured).

Glass job is holding up like it should...it’s odd! Any thoughts?

Is it painted... either under or over the glass?

Would not enough hardener during layup be the cause? Done on a rainy day?

Ruling out any funky chemical interaction with paint (I've had nightmares created in some situations), you probably are smelling residual styrene molecules diffusing out of the cured resin. Even after full cure, styrene continues to diffuse out of all thermosetting plastics, especially polyester and vinylester resins. And the closer you get the the cure temperature, the faster the rate of diffusion. So it makes sense that the smell is strongest when the board got hot.

Proper mixing of catalyst into the resin limits the amount of available styrene to diffuse, both during and after cure. But... at least theoretically... the diffusion rate of styrene never reaches zero, no matter how well mixed the resin is.

Thanks Professor LB. He has made me other boards and this is a first. I had a theory this morning but wanted to hear you first.

When I picked up the board, I brought a board sock with me. I have used the sock since day one of picking up board which was literally freshly made. I am wondering if it is lingering in the sock?

I would say my truck was about 80 degrees when I got in it earlier today and it was pretty pronounced (so not super hot like 100 or something crazy). What is the cure temp? I'm going to remove the sock neck sessions and see if that matters. thx!!!
