Like a secret society of Moderators?!? If they have cool ceremonies like the one in 'Eyes Wide Shut', then I want to be a moderator!
Sorry secret moderators, I wasn't trying to hijack. I'll shut up now.

So how is this different from Wayne pushing his agenda? While not an advertisment it does talk about Roy's products. And your statement that it is not TOO SPAMMY is funny, so there are different degrees of spam that are allowed? Well that is cool cause I like living in the grey area.

So i made it the first 5 mins....Had to stop when he said "...my first board was a success..."

Not to humble there are we??

By what and who's measure was it a success? I can say my first surfboard was a success to. As i learned from the process and had a finished, surfable board in front of me when all was said and done. Heck i even surfed it a few times.
Would i call it a success in the actual sense of producing a quality board? Not one bit. In fact i think it lasted a few months before i ripped the glass off and started anew. Now of course, just because i couldnt make a quality board doesnt mean everybody else can't tho right? So i just wanna hear more of the story.

no one else here got interviewed for their contributions to surfing, however trivial/offbeat/arrogant these noted contributions may be, this should stay, read it or not, up to you

I already did click it. Hence the question i had. However, if there was a way to read say the transcripts of the interview i'd be way more inclined to check that out cause you could skim thru the fluff to the good stuff. And you wouldnt have to deal with the talking.

Thought you maybe figured something helpful out.

I agree and that's the point I was making really, that it's hard to say how long it takes to learn how to make surfboards.

If the board works it is a success, but one always keeps learning. It's never cut and dried.

I was hoping for the sake of all that is good you were going to answer the question with this sort of answer, yet you went with the "i was good from day 1"

Not really quite the same. But hey to each their own.

I was good from day one ( the first board was very good) and I keep learning.

Am I supposed to say that board #1 was no good when it rode really well? A lot of thought went into the first design.

Also since in your haste you stopped after that comment you didn't get the full answer, which included the comment you were after i.e. that one always keeps learning.

Like i said "very good" by whose standards. I find it hard to believe, no matter how much thought went into the first board that it was a quality shape worthy of accolades. I dont even think the greats (takayama, mctavish, blake, noll, frye, etc...) even go so far as to say their 1st was a great board.

I think your lack of humility may be why so many people have issues with you and/or your posts. It says something when you dont have to toot your own horn so much.

Yeah Roy thinks very highly of Roy and will let everyone know it. Maybe we should just all accept that Roy is the best shaper in the world, his designs are light years ahead of all others, and wearing a orange/red prisoner jumpsuit and helmet to surf in is well lets face it... just plain awesome! Three cheers for Roy he's sooooo cooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im not trying to start a dis war or anything. I'm 100% for people doing things different. Different styles, different color wetsuits, different boards, materials, designs, whatever. The helmet is a bit kooky but hey keep that melon safe.

Im just merely stating, in general, surfers are a humble bunch. Of course theres exceptions to everything im well aware of that. I'm just surprised he's so quick to praise what he does. Let somebody else sing your praises, it sounds better.

Yep I agree with you, only wish Roy would take the advice but alas he will only come back with a snarky or cryptic comment.

Mine obviously, since I designed and built the board for my own use.

I am a very critical test rider. The board was a success, the glassing was less than perfect and the buoyancy was on the low side but the ride was very good indeed. The board also departed from established dogma in several key respects.

More thinking less trial and error... it works if the mind is up to the task.

I've done many boards which involved big changes in size, shape and fin setup etc, and almost all have been very successful in the first instance.

Getting it right first time is important when working with wood because it takes a long time to make a board. I will often spend more time thinking about the design than making it... and it takes 100 to 200 hours to make a board.

Whatever... their experience is not my experience.

I don't go for this humility/ego dichotomy, I just go for the truth to the best of my ability, even if it offends.

If it offends, it can sometimes just be the pain of the brain trying to expand, and the emotions objecting to the change.

High or low is meaningless really, it's a 'how long is a piece of string' question.

I don't think that there can be a 'best shaper in the world' any more than there can be a best surfer in the world, so don't try to attribute that sort of idea to me.

So many of the responses people post involve ridiculous statements like "all people".. "nobody"... "best" and so on, it's just clunky black or white thinking, an impediment to clarity and accuracy.

Wetsuit colour and protective headgear are not relevant to the discussion.

The truth in your eyes. As stated you are your own test pilot.

I think the fact that the above mentioned shapers have shaped for whom we consider the most influential figures of our sport and have in turn designed and adjusted their shapes thru that input and trial and error.

So what you're saying is that all your designs were perfect from the get go, and the blueprints were all you needed. I call b/s. You never decided a fin would be better used maybe a 1/2 inch forward, or back after said shape was tested? Maybe your surfing abilities arent quite up to par for giving a proper all around ride report.
