Don't forget to cross step, don't shuffle. Much easier to start off on the right foot then to try and correct bad habits later. And listen to DP. Get on that tail and goooooooo. Enjoy!
Oh yeah, he had better work that tail, because it will be the only tail he is getting for a while.....
I had one for a while and rode it in all kinds of surf. It's one of those LBs that work really good in good surf. Not just a "log" for small waves.
I have some extra money that fell in my lap yesterday and would like to pull the trigger on a new boart. I was contemplating a few different options a while back and think I have it narrowed down to a traditional or retro fish. I'm going to probably go with a 5'8". I really like how this one looks in the picture. Any other suggestions are welcomed. I'm about to reach out to Greg G. real soon to get the ball rolling.
pretty but as Mitchell said many moons ago, those boards are designed for soft CA walls not our crap.
So you don't think I'll get to ride this boart very often? I'm thinking about those waist - head high days that are nice and lined up with some medium - long period swell. We don't get those conditions every day but enough times a year to make it worth it I feel. I don't have to rely on this boart since I have several others. I want a true fish in my quiver, my Coil Flashback Fish isn't exactly a fish, it's a beefy Fish / HPSB hybrid and it's 6'4". So I narrowed it down to this boart or I could go another route and get a Mini Simmons, which I'm sure would get more water time than the Fish given we get a lot of small mushy days but my LB handles those just fine. Maybe I will get the Mini Simmons next since I'm drawn to this boart for some reason.
here's my opinion on these types of boards...I hate retros. They are retro because better shapes were developed. I rode these types of boards in the 'day' and found them lack. Having said that, what i love to do is take some characteristics of older boards and create new shapes with my shaper using modern outlines. My roundnose fish quad squash is amazing!!
You can borrow a lot from the original Lis design, and combine that with some subtle modern tweaks to make a way better riding board... and it will still look like a true retro fish to the naked eye. KEEP: wide... like 21" wide flat rocker, especially in the tail where an inch or less is typical down rails, with no edges deep "fish" tail, not the tighter swallowtail. Full volume... flattish deck and beaked nose instead of domed deck and foiled thin in the nose and tail Fiberglass leash loop instead of leash plug Glassed on plywood fins (unless you travel) CHANGE: flip the first four inches of nose add some panel vee in the entry rocker go concave bottom instead of traditional flat to vee: fade in a single concave under the panel vee in the nose, then fade in doubles where the deepest part of the single is... and run those doubles straight out the back. Go single foiled or 60/40 foiled keel fins, slightly toed and canted instead of double foiled and straight ahead with no cant. CONSIDER: EPS/Epoxy over traditional PU/PE, and go a little heavier on the glass job. Don't worry about it being stiff... short, thick fish don't flex much anyway... only a little in the swallows.
Right on, I hear ya. Being that I don't NEED a new boart, I'm open to trying something totally different than what I'm already riding. Something that will compliment my style of surfing when there are good waves to ride. I enjoy big arching turns, going rail to rail, I like coming off the bottom and going vertical at the lip and hitting a snap / roundhouse. I thought about getting another boart for crappy waves instead but those boarts / waves don't get my dick hard like this boart does.
If it were you, would you go with the original design or would you go with these minor tweaks / changes you listed here? I obviously want it to work well when the conditions call for this boart. I appreciate your feedback.
It’s called a Walden Mini Mega Magic if I’m correct and it’s the cats ass from all reports.... and the big magic is wave machine even for beginners - catches everything except the clap
You and LBC are describing one my favorite boards I ever had. 5'5 Dave Endress shaped Pride surfboard. This thing was super fat, almost 3 inches thick, 21 1/2 inches wide with a 16 inch tailblock and a deep wide swallow tail. It had very little rocker at all and it paddled like a longboard. I took it to costa and rode some nice slopey walls, but it also did great in my hometown surf. Man I loved that board. Do it DP you will not regret it!!
That's what's up! I going for it, it just looks / sounds fun to ride. I'll take the modern tweaks into consideration and see what happens.
