I was wondering if anyone remembers this incident at the spot: One day, I can't really remember but probably in the fall, there was good surf and a good crowd at the spot. The sun was out, the wind was offshore and there was plenty of swell in the water. It was one of those days where the swell wasn't that big and the best place to be was the peak right in front of the end of the pier, so we were all pushing it closer and closer. All the while, the tide was coming up and the waves were breaking closer and closer to the pier and that wooden groin. This guy paddles out on a BRAND NEW board with this beautiful glass job.. all colors and shiny. He's just so stoked about his new board he's talking it up with everybody...He's so pumped he's not even wearing a leash!...the board is just glowing it's so pretty...the other guys at the peak actually shuffle around to let this dood get in position. we all want to see him get a wave on this board .....FIRST wave he goes for, he's way too deep. right in front of the pier! he BAILED ouT!! and there goes the beautiful new board RIGHT INTO THE PIER!! CRUNCH!! now he's out the back treading water and watching helplessly cursing as the next five waves continue to obliterate his baby.. I'll never forget the sound of the crowd watching.. it went like this, CRUNCH "OOOHHHH!!!!" ....next wave, CRUNCH!! "OHHHHHH!!!!!" ....next wave, CRUNCH, "AWWWWWW!!!!!" I felt pretty bad for that guy, but it was entertaining to see what happens when you go a little too far tempting fate.
didn't catch that one but one of the legends - the grant washburn of nyav - one time got hung upside down off the pier end piling - by his leash - and had to whistle over help from the boardwalk. john if you're on this forum - look its 2015 - and that story lives on.
