hey guys im a little new to the actual forum but just thought i'd post a quick question as i've been researching to help make a decision, just wanted some personal experience feedback. my sister is running a marathon in san francisco in 2 weeks and i am thinking of going out for a few days and checking it out. i know there are some quality surf spots in the area but was wondering if any of you guys had any on hand experience around the middle of october. i'd only be out for a few days so i don't want to waste too much time if its not worth going (or paying to bring boards). anyone got any good stories? or reasons to consider going elsewhere? (i have the week off so i'd like to get some kind of trip in). i'm not looking for names of spots or to blow up any secret spots, just a general idea of whether it is worth it. also while i have your attention check out the company my two buddies and i have started: http://www.dontpanicapparel.com/ give us some feedback on your thoughts!!! thanks for any help, it is appreciated
I've been in the same situation several times, going to SF for a few days for weddings, work or whatever reason. You should definitely try and surf. I rent a car in SF and head south toward Santa Cruz. The drive itself is so much fun. Decent board rentals can be had in SC and spots abound. Pack a 4 ml suit and you'll be fine. One time I stayed overnight in a cabin at the KOA campground just outside Santa Cruz. totally cheap and comfy and right near waves. Awesome trip.
Some interesting spots in central/northern ca...Ocean Beach the most famous beach in san fran(for the most part) is heavy. The paddle is very tough...as it can break far out, a lot of times 3 consistent breaks coming in from the outside to the shorebreak...and the shorebreak can get very heavy. Of course, it all depends on conditions, but its kind of how blacks beach in san diego can get heavy at chest high, same type of deal...some very beautiful scenery on highway 1 from san fran south(and north as well). Lots of spots throughout.
I'd go to Santa Cruz as well. Be careful around San Francisco, the area is known for great whites. I'll be in Santa Cruz early November - looking forward to it.
