After years of watching rednecks from PA whip up and down the DE beaches in their F450s and truck nuts, I figured now's a good time as ever to get in on the act.

I've got a 5 speed Xterra, which I've taken in snow up to my doors. Any advice for first time sand drivers besides always park below the high tide line? I figure I'll drop my PSI way down and just stay in the tracks made by these behemoths.

I usually take my 4runner V8 4x4 out to Oregon Inlet for random fun. It's cool riding on the beach...sand can get deep. Definitely lower the PSI. I would probably park above high tide line. Also, I would not drive near the water...at least where I have been there are some soft spots near the water that suck you in and you can get stuck real easy. I have not done it in a year or so but it's cool to let your inner redneck out!!!

Ha! I was kidding, you've have to be a Barry (moron) to park below the tide line.

Full up yer gas tank before you head out onto the sand. Driving on sand uses up a ton of fuel.

Somewhat related; Check out the "Oregon Inlet Idiots" facebook page for some fine examples of how NOT to do it. There was a post from a couple weeks ago where some dude drove a Maserati into the deep stuff.

last year i saw a Caddy in the early morning hours stuck halfway into the beach. Note no driving is allowed on Folly Beach. I was passing the tourist couple talking to the cops, heard "just wanted a closer look at the stars". was pretty funny to hear. there are parking spaces right before it, he literally drove 30 ft further before he was stuck. those parking spaces are facing a condominium, so if he's gonna get it on in the Caddy you prolly wanna risk it and get as close to the ocean as possible

it floods around dwntn Charleston so much, that if you don't know when the water level is too high for you to drive in, you shouldn't drive here when it's raining. when it would pour and be 4-6 ft, my buddy would drive his jeep through our buddies' backyards and around dwntn in general. 75% of the time, there will be a BMW flooded

Take a shovel or two with you, and avoid getting hung up on your axle.

If you lose a truck in the water you should have your drivers license revoked on the spot.

I don't let the air out until the second I start to dig. Not a second after!!! I'm too lazy to depressurize and repressurize (15lbs). Usually I get away with it. The Range Rover kook actually had a chance if he let the air out once the truck stopped moving. The biggest mistake people make is spinning and digging the wheels. You'll be sitting on the frame in about 2 seconds, and then you're f'd. Never spin the wheels, and if you're not moving, lower your pressure to 15lbs immediately; then the truck will drive away with ease. Stay away from the water! Staying in other people's tracks goes a long way too. Bring a jack and a 12"x12"x.75 board to support it. Shovel. First aid. Flash light. Tow rope/chain. Garbage bag. Your brain. Have fun, don't be a richard.

All of this sounds like common sense... unfortunately it's not very common

In Del you have to be actively engaged in surf fishing to drive on the beach- don't forget your gear

Lol..."gear"....hook and bait optional (actually avoid since your kids are skimming and body surfing out front) 6 foot rod with and 6 oz. hurricane sinker to keep the line from moving anywhere for the 8 hours its sitting there unattended.

Most of you guys nailed it already. But ill add a few things you guys missed....

    1) spray down your undercarriage afterwards to avoid rust and corrosion. This is actually something we all should do since we are near the water and there is most definitely salt water in the air.

    2) following tracks is great. But sometimes those tracks can get too deep and you'll start to bottom out on the higher sand between the tracks. Usually not a big deal but depending on your vehicle it may cause some minor damage. So just be aware of that.

    3) shovel and Jack and a board were already mentioned. But i also suggest a tow rope. Never had you use mine but always have it just in case.

    4) don't drive like an ass. go slow. It gets bouncy at low speed, no need to floor it.

Funny story. This douche i knew back in high school took a girl on the beach.... trying to impress her or whatever. Got stuck. So he tried getting out by spinning his tires, just digging himself in deeper. Asked another guy to push him out. Well because he dug himself so deep, the front bumper of the other truck smashed his rear window and put a huge dent in the lift gate. Idiots. I was dieing when i was told the story
