    Bro's,

I need your input. I might be taking a job in LA (I know..I know...) Right now, looking at the maps, Santa Monica is a 40 minute commute & Ventura would be about 55.

Anyone have reasons for one over the other? I've only been up that way a few times and thought Santa Monica was more entertaining. Ventura seems slower & more country - which I'm OK with.

    LMK - Thanks!

If you live in Santa Monica get used to close outs or driving hours south or north. LA is the worst surf city. (http://www.theinertia.com/surf/10-r...e-best-city-for-a-surfer-to-live/#modal-close)

If you live in Ventura get ready to rip every swell that socal gets its hands on from perfect winter point breaks in santa barbara (the ranch, el cap, hammonds, RINCON pictured above), to the beach breaks (oxnard shores, port hueneme) with dane reynolds, to all the northern breaks of malibu (county line, staircases, leo carrillo)

I know. I'm not super excited about the traffic. I've been checking sig alert in the am and pm. It looks like I'd have the reverse commute.

The gig is in Santa Clarita. Lots more money and probably the best career move I could make, with out moving to Las Vegas. I don't mind not being able to surf Santa Monica. I drive all over to get my waves.

If it's Santa Clarita, then it's not really LA, although it's in LA County. Live in the Ventura area, avoid the
101/I-405/I-5 commute (unless it's 3 AM), and go via Santa Paula or Simi Valley.
I lived in Ventura/Oxnard/Camarillo from 1984-1997, and even the 101 rush hour traffic in the Ventura-Oxnard area can be terrible. Just have to try avoiding it as much as possible.
    Best of luck.

I thought about Santa Paula. ive never lived more than a minute or two from the beach, I don't think that will work. Thanks for the info! Makes me feel a little better than reading gaffers comments. I absolutely hate traffic.

Does Santa Monica get good? I thought they never really got anything with the big island swell.

I'm working in Playa Vista, and recently decided to call Hermosa my home (for now). I think Santa Monica would be an easier commute (maybe?), so it'd be cool to get the inside scoop.

Side Note: It doesn't seem like blowing up spots matters all that much. Maybe certain streets get good when the sand bars line up, but looking out on the water this morning at 7:00, there were probably 300 people within eyesight.

There's sh-tty surf in SM. The only reason to surf there would be if you have no choice but to live there. It's rideable sometimes, but always worse than everywhere else. Trying to drive up the 405 to Santa Clarita is mission impossible. It'll be 2 hours one-way on a good day.

From Santa Clarita, you're pretty f--ked. It's an hour, minimum, to the coast without traffic. That's 2 hours of your life every day, sitting in your metal box. That's a full work day on your week with Friday's off! Just live where you work and drive in weekends, early early morning for DP or when you think you're gonna get evening glass, like every other val.

You might want to reconsider the move, if you HAVE to live on the coast. If you worked an extra 8+ hours at your current job, every week, would you make more money?

Then again, in a few years, you'll be able to dial up an UBER google self-driving car and sleep on your way to work, so maybe the commute won't be such a bear then.
