When some days the first two full pages of the forum are new topics? Yeah, sometimes. Like I said, the tech treads are miles better than the non-surf "save society" ones or the other redundant and slightly surf-related ones (witch wetty, gloves, etc.) that pop up multiple times a day. For these better topics, I think the worst effect is that quality posts are not consolidated in a sunilar tread and watered-down across several. You know I dig the convo pertaining to technique. I'm not freaking out here buoys. Just reminding what a highly-functional forum is like. Ax brewengineer bouts this. He knows. He's on other forums.
Emass. Right now Your name is on the first page of this place. 8 Times. That's Insane. And people come and go from forums, but more importantly their knowledge Grows as their surfing develops. They'll often have New information to share about something they may have known little or nothing about before. Maybe let this place be how it is? Some of your guys more "classic" threads have developed from this. Hell you wouldn't even have the term "wetsuites" had it not been for the very thing you're looking to change. Ask the questions when you have them.
Heard that bro. You make great points that I agree with. Especially the classic tread point, and in a few ways this one is pretty damn good already! I think the more regular users of the forum get sick of the same question and same answers, just as denizens of other forums do. Just gets tiring at times with some topics rehashed over and over. Imagine if the Roy Stuart Surfboards tread (all 105 pgs of it) was split into 15 different ones lol kpd, how come you're getting rid of your Carver? FLY A BANNER FOR REPETITIVE TREADS THAT GIVE BIRTH TO CLASSICS AND SI GLOSSARY TERMS
There's a thread on Swaylocks right now called "What makes surfboards go" that could be a good place to start, if you care to wade through it.
Emass, couple of points: 1. New members, or people that didn't see the old thread, or maybe people that want to get a fresh take on something, are all legitimate reasons why a topic can and should be started up again. 2. This isn't Surfing's Wikipedia. It's a forum. If I or someone else has a question, we are going to ask about it, not research it. And we want answers to our unique question, how we asked it. Just cause there is a similar thread from 6 months ago does not mean our version of the question or topic can be answered. 3. People come to forums to talk. Again, its not a database, where if I have a question, I'm just going to search threads for the info. That's no fun. We're here to have conversations with other surfers on random topics. 4. There are always new people on this. Maybe someone who wasn't a member 6 months ago has a fresh take or a great way of explaining one of these old topics. We've jabbed a few times, had a few PM's where we helped each other out, and I have respect for you. But honestly man, if you are on here so much that repetitive topics in the forum section are angering you, get outside and get in the water or on your carver more...
fins, good to hear from you. I hear you on all these fronts. Not angry bro, I've said that numerous times in the last few responses. Others are getting far more excitable than I lol. Wish there were a wave to get on right now but there hasn't been one in days. Got on the Carver today too mang. Roads are getting rocky and sandy in the off-season now! Post more bud, you're one of the technical guys that have great things to add.
Humans can produce about 3/4 of a horsepower using muscular action, efficiency in terms of transfer to propulsion might be 20 to 30 percent in an ideal situation. This is small compared with the lifting power of the wave which is the primary energy source, but it's still significant. 'Pumping' also contributes to speed by improving positioning on the wave, or at least it can do. Re. the Swaylocks thread K Casey has a major glitch in his thinking which has been confusing the unwary for years.
Ramping is just what some people do with speed, this is about how pumping creates speed. Your question is irrelevant, and pumping is not confined to shortboards. You won't find anyone else introducing the idea that energy from pumping via rider effort can be estimated and compared with the energy supplied by the wave. I suggest that instead of knee jerking you instead think about it... after all it doesn't really matter who the messenger is.
It would be interesting to see how much speed and height skaters could get with high drag wheels which simulate surfboard drag. It wouldn't be much.
