I have done some minor diving/snorkling out west and it is sketchy.... There are all kinds of funky things down there. Water visibility is sketchy too... I don't do deep dark water. i always wanted to get scuba certified. diving in nj is a little sketchy, its pretty rare to get a nice clear day. I spear fish and theres been days when the visibility was only like 5 feet and others when its 50 feet. Depends on the conditions. There definitely is a lot of crazy stuff underwater right off the beaches and jettys we surf on a regular basis. I've seen sharks, huge sting rays, and tons of different kinds of fish right off the beach in new jersey. Scuba is really tough and pretty hardcore if you are gonna do it in nj, or anywhere in the Northeast due to the visibilty. I would definitely get certified if the visibilty was better more often but until i move some where else, i'm probably gonna stick to free diving and spear fishing off beaches. Everyone i've spoken to about it in dive shops have told me that if you can scuba dive in nj, you can do it anywhere in the world.
I Know a few divers and they tell me way off our coast like 100 miles out(I guess the gulf stream)the water is Aqua and the visability can be incredible out there.Around here i take it depends alot on the tides for clarity.
there is a Diving Supply store in Atlantic City or Pleasantville that hold classed and does certification . I dont rember the name but I think they are still in buisness
It's... well worth it.... I got certified through a local college I went to in Florida....I paid $350 for the coarse and it including 1 3-hour classroom session and 1 -3 hour dive session per week at a local pool for 3 months.....It included all scuba gear we needed even wetsuits, tanks, bcd's...it really got you acquainted w/ the gear before you dive/certify in the ocean. I have gone diving all over world and if the surfs down it's another option. Look for a reputable school for instruction too...Shy away from the resort style 2-day certification program....You will see how awkward they are with their gear and safety knowledge..
my uncle scubas in the DE bay quite frequently, he spears a lot of big taug and rockfish around the outer wall and some of those wrecks. He says he'll literally just go to the bottom, and sit behind a rock and wait until something swims into his vision (visibility is usually like 3 feet, 4-5 if the surf's been flat, and there hasn't been any rain). Its always sounded really sketchy to me, but he's been doing it for like 40 years...
There are some good wrecks not to far off the coast. There is an old WWII submarine wreck only about 20 miles out Ocean City, MD. There is also some dumped subway trains off Fenwick Island only about 15 miles out I believe.
Yea I think there is a ton of wrecks off are coast.N.J.I really dont know what you would see a 100 miles off the coast thou to answer your question(epic)Maybe a giant turtle.
I'm certified, whatcha wanna know? East coast is tough diving though. Super low vis, maybe 15-20 up here, better down south. I grew up in Michigan and we did a lot of diving there. Cold though. All the time.
