from surfline---SE southern hemi swell continues this morning. Conditions are clean across the region early with light NW/W winds. Expect winds to turn SE for the afternoon with continued SE swell -- Check the Surfline forecast for details.---southern hemi! are you serious! I thought these early summer small weaks ass groundswells come from the wrap around of the bermuda high near the hurricane belt not from some other system south of Brazil. Enlighten me please.
Believe it or not the East coast can get swells from the Atlantic Equatorial region off the Brazilian coast. To call it southern hemi is a little misleading, because it may make you think of the southern hemi swell the pacific gets from around the 45+ South region. We did see 16-17 second period swells move in on Saturday. There is still some small longer period swell out there, but this has dissipated to 14 sec. or so right now. To see how this is possible. Look at the wave maps, and zoom out to the North Atlantic level. You'll see how there is room to east of the brazil for SE fetch to make to the east coast. It doesn't happen very often, and I've yet to see a real significant swell from this region.
mysteries of the deep Yeah there is definately room for a swell to squeeze by and it is southern hemi because it is a few degrees below the equator. Is that where the current SE long period that came in on saturday and sunday and still holding small now is coming from? And is 17 seconds pretty much the longest period that hits us here? It did have a different feel out there, at least where i was, there was a lot more water moving around, rips everywhere, and long gaps inbetween the individual waves in the set obviously. Thanks for the knowledge.
I can't recall exactly where the SE fetch originated from... It could have been a little further north, closer to the windward islands, but given the 17 second period, its makes sense that it came from the equatorial region. Mathematically, I'm sure its possible to get a swell greater than 17seconds on the east coast, but I think thats about what we top out at.
