My woman and I have picked up a new hobby in the last 6 months or so. We have been frequenting the beach for our walks with the dog and exercise much more lately, even when its flat or rainy and cold. We have been finding some seriously awesome pieces of seaglass in the NH area. We have a piece of red, a bunch of cobalt blue, light blue, all sorts of brown shades, tons of different greens and even have black glass. My ultimate goal is to find an old glass bottle stopper. Call me queer, but this hobby is really fun. Plus its an excuse to go to the beach when there are no waves. Is there anyone else who appreciates this fine art mother nature provides us with? What are some cool pieces you have found? Do you know what any of them are from? Also, what are the coolest things you have found on the beach that didn't belong?
tampon applicator, it wasn't cool, though. LOL Actually, over the summer I found a boat bumper that had washed up. Dad has a 25 foot Slickcraft, gave it to him. I did know a guy who used to collect beachwood and he would make little model shacks and houses out of them, they were actually really cool.
Dude you could make your own bottle stoppers with the sea glass you found. Or at least upgrade bottle stopper caps with your glass. Most of the metal ones I have - have a top that screws off, then you just need to find an appropriately threaded bolt, cut the thread off, superglue/epoxy the glass at a cool angle like "how's it staying up like that" to it, let dry, screw back in and bam - custom
Not queer at all. Sea glass is tits, although seems to be getting harder and harder to find down here. But it's still possible...haven't found anything too crazy wash up, aside from the standard stuff, but the most unsettling was a chewed up whale pectoral fin one time. I'd like to go here, preferably altered...
That picture above is a mind blower. The Keyhole at wilderness in PR always has nice sea glass. I found one shaped like a heart and gave it to the little woman. Aint I sweet.
i pick it up when i find it, but it's pretty rare 'round these parts. i did once find a nice royal blue piece about the size of my palm when i was heading out for a surf. i tossed it above the tide line hoping i'd remember it & that it'd still be there when i was done. it was, so i was stoked. we've got various smaller sized bits of it lined up on our window sills along w/ shells & other pieces of flotsam & jetsam we've found...coral, sea fans, shards of bedrock, coal, etc...growing up, i remember the front yard was filled w/ the more interesting larger debris my dad would find; a lobster pot, old wooden ship's rudder, a piece of driftwood that must've been about half a tree. all the accumulated detritus of a life lived in, on, & near the sea. cool as ****, but it was a major pain in the ass to move it all when i had to mow the lawn!
i pulled in a dead 7 ft leather back sea turtle one day while lifeguarding in wb. finally got it in at mercers. it stunk to high hell and ppl were putting their kids on it to take pictures and sh!t. f'ing nasty.
Not much wave action there, so it might take a little longer. There's plenty of cool unbroken stuff mixed in along with the shards, though. For about six months after Sandy I found so much sea glass, I think a big part of it was that the number of beachcombers was greatly reduced.
Loads of it on antonios beach in front of puntas del mar... My wife found some bamboo roots n coconuts that look like a turtle...
We fill old jars with sea glass. If I'm not looking for peaks, I'm looking for sea glass. My wife took a trip to "Glass Beach" Outside of Seattle to do some beach combing. We make some cool jewelery with it. Get some silver wire and make earrings or necklaces. P.S. We are all a little queer on this here surf predictin' site!
Yeah we should have our own pride parade and what not. We deserve it. Clap clap we're here clap clap..
seaglass is cool. no homo. there is a book called "Flotsam" by David Wiesner, a brilliant illustrator. Any other bros on here with young kids I recommend you should go check it out from the library. It's about a kid who's collecting stuff on the beach and he finds something remarkable. cheers
You're welcome guys. Every Saturday night I sneak out with a bunch of different bottles drink them and break them on the beach. It's very therapeutic for me. I get violent when drunk so it's better for everyone's safety. The shards of glass are pretty jagged for the first couple of years but they smooth out nicely around year 7 or so.
Thanks Clemmy! My Wife and I call those shards "almost sea glass" and if they don't look dangerous, toss 'em back in for another spin cycle.
