well live here dirty jersey , and sunday afternoon surfing i had a little visitor . At first i thought was a ball or some kinda trash floating by . Curious , "ohwwww look its willson !" . So i figured i go paddle over snatch it up and throw at a buddy as he was riding a wave . Well it wasn't a ball and for a split second there i got frightened as i was registering what i was seeing . The moment i realized it was a seal , OH SHI$ !! i really think a bubble floated up my back as i was in retreat mode . After that i just kept an eye out for anything else out there . First time in long while i gotten creeped out by the ocean . Anyone else run into that little guy ?

Yea I see them all the time. They are cute, but in a kinda creepy way. They always just pop there head up and stare at you. Staring is rude

Only be scared if the seal looks scared.

That sounds like Mariah Carey wedged into her wetsuite. Perfectly understandable as to why you fled. Apparently, she caused a run on the bank just from showing up in her wetsuite.

Not a rare occurrence...happens very often this time of year and into mid spring. One was basking in the sun yesterday in ocmd where I was surfing.

I was freaked out first time I saw one too. They are kinda pervy, they way the pop up and stare then slowly fade down only to pop up on other side of you seconds later. They are cute, like puppy dogs. But aren't they the cheeseburger of the shark meal plan?

    Old news, dude.

A bunch of em are hanging out in Ponyland, OCMD and especially the bridge to any delaware locals that don't already know.

I don't think I've surfed a single day in the PNW without seeing a seal in or out of the lineup. They're that common here.

OTOH, we did have a whale breach out in the Harbor last weekend. That was pretty cool.

Other things also think we are they...the man in the grey suit. The ultimate local.
Seal populations are exploding on the East Coast, especially Cape Cod. They will eventually make their way further south to NJ and the Midatlantic in larger numbers.
Talk to the Mass. boys about the Great Whites coming inshore for the seals...not a good thing for people that like water activities. They are tracking and tagging Great Whites all over up there now. Very large ones
Just a matter of time and luck before someone in the Cape gets taken....

I only had one pop up on me and It didn't bother me at all... but I had a sea turtle pop up by me and I thought it was a sea serpent! I fell right off my board; if it was anything that wanted to eat me, I would have been easy pickings!! lol

Was sitting out the back in MoCo a few weeks ago with the lineup all to myself and one popped his head out of the water and took a peak at me. I called him in to the next wave and he got a four second frontside barrel and negotiated the closeout end section with a cheeky air reverse. Pretty cool experience.

Seal is good. New Jersey seal very friendly.

I never saw one until 2005.

Ever since, I've seen them every year multiple, multiple times.

They are just like puppies. Water puppies. Though you can't use peanut butter with them.
