Saw some when I visited Santa Cruz last March, cute little fellas, was just curious and hanging out. When he first popped up I turned and he was only 1-2ft from me so it caught me off guard at first, but once I realized what it was it was all good. I even saw a couple of them riding waves in and paddling back out like the humans were doing. Monkey see monkey do...

We are all part of the same compost heap.

Not really, if one bites you ,you will most likely die from a bacterial infection! Best to stay away...

Yeah there were packs of them at the Lane both Saturday and yesterday. 5-10ft from us most of the day. Not the first choice of company but whatever. I'm sure some cats in the lineup would rather have a seal next to them than me.

I've noticed over the years that GW attacks almost always occur when a surfer is alone or with a very, very small crowd...could mean something. I guess it would explain why nobody ever gets chased out of the water at places like Steamer. Then again, "New Year" has had quite a few people chased from the lineup. I just don't know.

I think Whitey is indifferent DP. I used to fish the flats for striped bass in the late 90's behind Nauset Beach and Monomoy Island on Cape Cod. Back then the seal population was starting to build, you would see more and more each year. They would take, bite and kill bass while you were bringing them in. After awhile we just didn't fish the inlet. The food chain now continues. More Great Whites are showing up every year in those same waters, more than likely they are looking for seals. The Outer Cape has some great beaches and beautiful sand bars set up for surfing but I won't surf there. Call me scared.- "too fishy"
