Surfed the mid-atlantic and carolinas for the past 15 years and have seen seals only rarely in this area. Once at Croatan VA, once in Frisco, N.C. Last month I saw one deep in the chesapeake bay, it was a harbor seal. I usually think their lost but probably migrate south during the winter months.

nittanysurfer... Yea, my guess was that he swam right under me and didn't see me because the water was so opaque. When he came up he was facing sort of away from me.

I actually saw a juvenile on the rocks in Long Branch one winter that got spooked and actually agressive. It was a sunny day after a storm, and the surf was pumping. He was hanging out on the end of a jetty, and a friend of mine thought he was sick or injured. Stupidly, he paddled over to it... we were all like, "don't do it man!" When he got about 10 yards away it literally lunged off the rock, mouth open... full attack mode. It dove into the water and swam off. We laughed like he1l!

I saw one a few weeks ago coming out of the shark river inlet. A few winters ago I saw one back to back weeks. The one I was like 20 feet from it and he was starring at me for awhile.kind of looked like a dog without ears.I think it wanted to buy me a beer.

In the late 80s, I had a manatee come up beside me next to the Kitty Hawk pier. I'm guessing that what it was. It had porpoised beside me, I saw no dorsal fin, and the tail was spoon shaped

probably was a mantatee. I was out with my brother in coacoa beach, FL. I was 13 and he was 14 at the time, and this dark shadow swims underneath us. we almost s*** our pants, and paddled out of the water like there was no tomorrow. finally it popped its head outta the water, and we both had a good laugh.

Saw a seal a few hours ago in central LI. Was all alone catching leftovers on the log when it popped up 10 yards away, looked at me for a few seconds and then disappeared. I might have been talking out loud telling the clouds to move along and let the sun through or encouraging the larger sets to come more frequently. But after it left the wind went a little more offshore and the sun stayed out until I was done. Thanks seal.
