i'm kind of disgusted by the very idea of this. we already ride boards shaped out of materials that aren't eco-friendly, and many ride boards shaped by pop-out manufacturers. The idea that this will ultimately improve boards is preposterous. guys have literally shaped great boards in their crappy back yards and garages. there is no place for this in surfing.
Here is what I am talking about.... HERE SHARKY, SHARKY http://www.gizmag.com/night-stalker-surfboard/15958/
Despite the claims of many "guru" shapers, no one really knows what water really does under a surfboard. There are a lot of theories, but it's mostly speculation. When car manufacturers design a body they put it in a wind tunnel and test it's aerodynamic characteristics. Why not do the same type of research for a surfboard. I'm all for gaining more knowledge of how water flows across the bottom of a surfboard under certain conditions. I bet we would find a lot out that we didn't know. The last 60+ years of surfboard design is mostly based on a book written in 1946 called Naval Architecture and Planning Hulls. I think it's probably time to update ourselves a bit. But that might require surfers to pay a little more money and most of us are a bunch of cheap ba$tards.
Your an idiot This has nothing to do with your eco-friendly crap or pop out surfboard manufactures. These guys are doing research and development to try and figure out to improve surfing as a whole. Just like another stated with car manufacturing, do you think back when they hit 100mph they said alright thats perfect lets stop? No, they continued to figure out ways to make cars faster and faster. If these guys can use all the data they get to design a better working surfboard or something then more power to them.
first of all, not to be "that guy" but when you call someone an idiot, you should probably say "you're" in order to strengthen YOUR argument of my idiocy. second of all, i'm not disputing whether or not this will improve surfing. i'm disputing whether or not this should be done. Surfing (and as an extension, board shaping) is supposed to be a near-spiritual experience. I'm sure we could devise an advice-giving computer program that would help you with all of your marriage problems or anything in your life and it could efficiently and effectively sort out your troubles.....why use the Bible*, or consult your friends when those aren't the "best" ways to solve your troubles anymore? *or whatever religious book of preference you have is fyi, the Hawaiians didn't/don't need sensor boards to "improve surfing as a whole"
first off great shamble, everyone loves a grammer nazi. but you are still an idiot, because no one in the surfing world is going to lose out on anything, in the pursuit of gaining more knowledge about their sport. dont be afraid of change. surfing might seem perfect but there is always room to grow. dont be the guy to slow down progress. to quote JFK " change is the law of life, those who live in the past and present are certain to miss the future." sumthin like that
interesting. How about pushing a button to change the rocker or the thruster setup back and forth or the camber? Or adjust the concave properties under the board. now that would be innovation. Perhaps a matter of time. However I don't think man can surf any better or do anything more mind blowing than what pros do now. It sounds a bit shortsighted but what else can be done on a wave?
look I pointed out originally that I wasn't trying to be a grammar nazi..... The thing is, i don't see how I'm an idiot for voicing my personal opinion. Now not to open up a completely different set of arguments but I equate it to football. In today's pro and D1 college football there are like 20 different assistant coaches. Linebacker coach, quarterback coach, punting coach, etc. There are computer analyzers and the like. It takes away the human element from the sport. (I realize football is much different from surfing, but go with me here.) I'm not saying there can't be any improvements to surfing, BUT, will there really be anything revolutionary to be gained from this soul-selling? Once again I'm just amicably agreeing to disagree, and I don't see how that makes me an idiot.
True.. All the impossible maneuvers and airs I used to do in transform surf game ten years ago is no longer fiction .. surfer are landing back flips and kick flips , seriously.. I geuss the next step is taking domesticated sea creatures, and surfing the shìt out them.. Who wouldn't wana put a saddle on a dolfin/shark and start shredding. Sodellocal we dnt think YOUR an idiot but Ur original post seemed myopic
With surfing, you can kinda divide surfers into two groups, the spiritual guys and the technical guys. The spiritual guys do it for the love and the stoke, and get a natural satisfaction with the activity. The technical guys are into the performance aspects of it and look to improve their surfing whether it be tweaking board shapes or taking up some type of cross training. I think in general, most surfers are a little bit of both. With only a few who are at the extremes in each of the two categories. Lets face it, we all use technology to schedule our sessions when we check out all sorts of weather buoys and oceanic activity data, so why can't they extend it to this?
Wow some of you people are babies, im going to call the wambulance. Read the story people, jeez. At what point did the article mention it was going to put speakers, and touch screens on boards. They are trying to use technological advances to improve OUR sport. Technology is a tool and that's it!!! Shapers have been using tools ever since a board was made, unless they just spent years of scrapping a piece of wood with thier fingernail. Just to let you know, Mr., computers have been shaping boards for years now. It improved our sport by making more consistant boards. We are just figuring out the whole volume thing BECAUSE of computers. I don't see any negative with this story what so ever. They are improving our sport and if they change the way boards are shaped. More power to them, and you know what, I will be experimenting myself by riding one. "Its our God given American right to speak loudly about subjects we know nothing about"
I suppose you are right. Neither did the Wright brothers when they took flight. But look where technology has taken that. and who says surfing is supposed to be a spiritual experience?
Well, if your personal opinion is stupid, then you're an idiot. (not necessarily saying that is the case here...)
