Haha dude i was thinking of asking if you wanted me to shape her somthing. Was going to wait till i got a few more under my belt before popping the question. So you were probably joking, but i kind of am taking orders. I'll explain. Told a few friends i was going to take a crack at shaping. Told them id shape them somthing next, don't expect master pieces, it's practice for me and i'll split or cover cost of materials. So yeah, if your serious the same goes for you buddy Got the leash plug installed today. Went so much better than yesterday's finbox. And the fin box looks alot better today then it did yesterday. So that's good. Not much to say about leah plug. Hole saw, resin, done. Got lots of sanding tomorrow, then going to lay down the gloss coat. Going to be a late night. Sat morning im be finishing it with the final sanding and polishing.
I have a dark green Mindless 9'0" single fin LB and it WAS fast. Then the sun got to it, and it delamed, and got waterlogged, now it is a beast. Once it gets going it moves on it's own. If you live in the Sunshine State, I recommend a bright Canary Yellow, or a Devo Polka Dot in neon orange/yellow/blue on white. That will make you go fast, and look cool.
Not joking at all Pal - id have you do a 7’2” x 20ish x 2.75” with decent entry rocker, single concave up front, into flat and then double out the back version of yours, thruster, in bright canary yellow with her name in made into a lam with palm trees around it. I’d get the lam done. And your getting paid what a good custom bort would cost Bruh. You know her; she will be over the moon and that’s worth a million to me. And HOW FRIKKEN COOL would it be for us to come down to do a surf weekend and surprise her with it....amazing.
That would be pretty damn cool, i think she would get a stoke overload! But your not paying me. I got a great idea, call it a trade. I'll shoot you an email in a bit.
Tell you what Mr Bigs, you can pay ME for the boart Bassmon builds for your daughter. That way someone gets paid here, it’s the least I could do.
Aww, I never knew you are such a "fashionista" , sis. What's next...the cat runways of Paris, London and Toronto??
I don't much about shaping but just learned a lot this morning reading through this thread, one of the best on here. Respect Bass, stick looks sick, looking forward to hearing how she goes.
Made it look pretty easy didn’t he? Haha I know it’s NOT, but great look from idea to finished product! And good to see you pop up Manik!
What kind of sander do you have? If it's variable speed, start with low RPMs with heavy grit paper (80 or 100) on a hard pad. I recommend doing the rails by hand with a hard block to knock down the bumps, then finish them with the soft pad or just by hand. Bring your RPMs up as the grits get higher, and switch to a medium or soft pad.
Yeah, i don't have a legit sander most guys use. I have a little orbital sander with a roto mode, variable speed. The deck/bottom are pretty damn smooth. Rails aren't bad either but i got some spots to knock down. Not sure how well the sander i have will work. Iv used it on plenty of big ding repairs and it works good. Whole board is a diffrent story. It's looking like i might be doing more by hand because of the location of my high spots. I will be upgrading the sander on the next board though. Didn't want to splurg to much on the first board haha
Just got finished sanding and laid the gloss coat on the deck. Sanding is a son of a beached whale the deck and bottom are really quite flat. One or two high spots on each. The rails were tough. But i got it done and I'm happy with it. A few times i caught myself saying "good enough" then had to tell myself "No! Bad! Keep going!". My fin box massacre looks pretty darn good compared to what it looked like before fully installing the box. I had one pretty good burn through. Besides that only a few tiny ones. I did make one big mistake though. I must of made this mistake a few days ago and didn't realize till today. The tail on the bottom. The heel side corner of the diamond tail. Resin must of pooled there during my hotcoat. Kinda threw my vee off but raising (or lowering?) That corner. I was sanding at it forever. But it's such a small spot i couldn't sand it with the sander without hitting other spots around it. Got it as good as i could but eventually it started showing signs of burn through around it so i stopped. It's not terrible. Still vee. Just uneven with the other side slightly. Oh well, first board and lesson learned. Besides that everything else is looking mint. I'll get pictures for you guys tomorrow before and after the final sanding.
Won't be totally done till tomorrow. I'll get pictures of bottom contours and all the other goodies then. But here's a teaser. Excuse the terrible lighting
Hahahaha!! If you knew him you’d laugh.. I dont think ive met a more quietly intense focused and disciplined younger dude. BUT with a good mix of total chill. Maybe a Rasta Bass holding a bucket list! Best part is, he doesn’t exude any of that intensity when you hang around with him. He’s just easy going and giving. That’s why this project is super fun for me and my daughter and even my wife to see happening... it’s such an detailed and driven thing out of a totally laid back soul hahaha
Boards done. Polished up. Didn't polish long, just wanted to give it that pop. Polishing by hand is a chore! Don't look like waves id want to ride this thing in in the near future so i may go back at it later. Although i went freelap, which was a total bad call on my part, i kind of like how it looks like that. Not terribly disappointed with that call
