Sharkbanz....I've been reading about this and finally decided to pull the trigger and purchase one, but I would like some input/experiences/comments from you guys/gals? And yes, I realize the men in gray suits have always been there, are there now, and will always be lurking around us regardless of what deterrent is available, but as you start to get older and realize its no longer just you at stake....its the kiddos and the wife too, you start to think (and that's not good...this is what happens when you hit mid 40's I suppose). So anyone have any firsthand experiences with this gadget? Oh, and since this is only the second time I have ever posted on here, Let the name calling, bashing, wise ass commenting, criticizing, and whatever else begin......I know how this works! :p And I'm sure this topic has most likely already been covered....but I'm too lazy to look for the thread!

Did you really get it for Bradley beach NJ? Or do you spend a lot of time in sharkier areas?

My friend uses it. She has never gotten bitten. But then again, neither has anyone else. Except me about three years ago. Bit my knee in thigh deep water walking out the board. It left nice hole in my neoprene. People and waves scare me more than sharks. She fishes a lot, and so is more in tune with shark potentials.

Yeah, that comes with territory of becoming a parent. It lasts until they are adults and doing well on their own.

But then.....come grandkids, and it starts all over again......at least, so it has with me.
    Merry Christmas Betty!!

BS, there is no way that works. I'm a fisherman, there are times that the fish will attack anything that passes in front of their noses, even a lure covered in muck with the tail in a knot. Most other times they are more picky. Sharks are generally more picky but there will be days that they would see sharkbanz as a tasty snack and will pick the target wearing one over one without. Your better off with nothing that make you stand out from the crowd.

I agree with this. You must have learned a lot about nature, not only fishing, but your fancy of pigeons.
I say that as a good thing. Darwin ws a pigeon fancier--it helped him work out and explain certain aspects of his natural selection theory, as he prepared to write his Origins book.

I suggest you save your money to put towards a new wave surf riding boart or something.

Yup, I've learned a lot from them. Even performed minor operations, administered medications both orally and through injections. Pigeons have taught me a lot. When I had to give my dog her shots I was already used to it so just picked her up and popped it in. Was also into tropical and marine fish for decades and learned a lot of science through them. I can tell you I have cured countless bouts of Ick, lol.

Accept that they are there dude. Nothing is going to deter a wild beast from mauling anything it wants. Be confident in the water and stay aware. That's all you can do.

This is my preference for shark deterrents:

    Its effectiveness is demonstrated here:

Also, to make you feel better when I started surfing I had a slight sharky phobia. After more and more time in the water I've become confident but still stay aware. I've seen a handful of sharks in NJ when surfing. Nothing massive but they lurk. Just be respectful and when you get that feeling, trust your gut, go in. Saw a thresher breach right next to me about two months ago. Was super rad. I stayed out.

If it gives you peace of mind then it's worth it. It shouldn't matter what other people think, just trust in what you believe in.

Except I read somewhere that while it could protect the person wearing the device, it might put others nearby at higher risk of getting bitten.

Forget the wrist band, your part of the growing food chain as soon as you dip your piggies.
Surf like a brave cause your chances of drowning are much higher

I'm just saying that it's pretty useless to worry about them, getting nipped or attacked is so random. And until the time that a scientifically proven, every-day repellant comes out, it just seems like throwing $$$ at another bottle of snake oil.

    YMMV
