i've only had one experience with sharks. it was over this past summer. my dad and i were down at s-turns in obx in july. the sets were pretty consistent at about 4-6 occ 8ft. the low tide didnt help the paddle out either. well anyways, the clean up sets kept catching us and the whole 100 other guys on the inside. my dad was starting to get annoyed so he paddled out about an extra 30 yds outside the lineup to relax. i was talking to some of the other guys when my dad paddled calmly but fast back to the lineup. i paddled up to him asking him what happened. apparently a 4-7 ft shark with a long dorsal fin had swam about a foot or two away from from his hand in the water. he said it put him in shock for a second. from that time on, on that day, i stayed in middle of the crowd.

    Obx

Have never seen one while surfing NC. There was 4 foot shark spotted by my bud while we were out a couple of years ago but we did not go in.
I had something break the water under my arm while paddling out by myself four years ago. I went in after that happened.

I was in wildwood in early May of last year when my buddy's and I paddled out in chest high mushy conditions. The sky was overcast and the water was murky and I even remember thinking "imagine if a shark just popped up?" Then I heard my friend say out loud " dude what the F***?" I looked over and I saw a dorsal fin, very big and a perfect triangle, not curved back like a dolphins fin, sticking out of the water and swimming adjacent to us. I quickly caught a wave in on my stomach, my friends followed. My friends and I always joke about it today because they said before they could look at me again I was already on the beach :D

    i am shark bait

I was surfing the airport in frisco NC. Sitting on my board a 6-8 shark hit from underneath and behind lifting me out of the water until I fell off the board. Lifted me up like I was nothing. Buddies on the inside paddling out saw the shark and everything unfold.
Surfing behind my house in Nags Head I was bumped twice once under the tail of my board while sitting on it, turning me almost 180deg around. Then a few waves later from under and behind shooting my board out from under me. I caught the next wave I could in. I made it to about 10ft from sand and looked back to the whitewater and saw a 6ft sandtiger following me across the bar!
That just whats happened to me. I've seen a lot more. My boss showed me a picture of him laying on a longboard with an eight year old girl sitting on the nose, going down the line on a chest high wave. The water was crystal clear. Not ten feet behind was a TEN foot tiger shark following in the wave. You could see the stripes on its back. That was Pea Island.

ive had a few bull sharks come up to me. but if they get antsy and start bumping then i pull out the knife 12 inch blade that is and beat them to death. in fact just a few months ago i got in a fight with a shark he broke my nose but he lost the battle left him with 10 wounds in his body.

    sharks

I've seen a 5-6 foot black tip while surfing at Emerald Isle in North Carolina. It was pretty early in the morning, and was out with my brother, who was surf kayaking. My dad saw it first and was screaming at my brother and I, who hadn't seen it. He was keep yelling "its not a dolphin", and we were a little was out and thought he was just saying that there was a dolphin. My brother wasn't paying to much attention to the surf, and tipped over. He said that when he opened his eyes while under water, he saw the shark as it was swimming past him within a foot or so.

The worst experience I have had though was with a Blue Fish. I was surfing alone pretty late in the afternoon and got bit by one on my knee. I never saw the fish, but there was clear bite marks, and a fair amount of blood. My brother had also been bitten by one earlier that day, again while surf kayaking. The bloody fish jumped out of the water into the boat, bite him, and jumped out.

A couple weeks ago I was surfing Playa Grande, CR and a decent size bull swam two foot in front of my board, and I did the only thing there is to do, just sit there and stand my ground...or water...lol I'm sure I'll have plenty more run ins with 'em, but it really doesn't bother me...
