During my sophomore year in college when I first started surfing, the one thing that always sat in the back of my mind was thought of sharks. Nothing intimidated me more than visualizing that ominous dark figure swimming around below me. A friend had told me about some research he came across supporting the idea that contrasting patterns could be used to deter sharks. The idea is that the contrasting pattern, like those on the pilot fish and lion fish, lets the shark know that you’re not an item of prey. I recently decided to create a vinyl decal for my surfboard based on this research. My question for you guys is would you consider putting one on your board? Would you be willing to pay $50 for a body board sized decal, $65 for shortboard, and $80 for longboard? The link below has a picture of the decal on a lineup of boards. http://imgur.com/RArOINU
Cool! Check out what the Aussies in Perth did. Shark resistant suits and boards. One of the suits makes you look invisible to the shark with two tones, blue and white washed throughout the suit, the other looks like a poisonous fish. The boards are the same
just paint the largest possible sea turtle(s) on the bottom of your board. surely the shark won't bother with that.
I kinda like my decal of the gnome in his orange jumper; pasted on the bottom of my board, it totally freaks out sharks. They think they're witnessing the end of the world. Having said that, and realizing that not everyone can obtain the limited-edition life size gnome decal, your product is crying out for testing. For greater market appeal. May I suggest that you be dropped into the waters off Cape Town. Let us know how the stripes on your board work out for you with South Africa's snuggle-prone great whites.
I like the idea of it but you'd need to test it before anyone is willing to buy it for that price. And it looks like the one that nick gave a link too. you'd need to compete with the other products otherwise yeah I think it's a good idea
You should pitch this to that "Shark Tank" show. They'd love it and you might get some coin to fund it. I'm serious, I bet they'd have you on because its a cool niche idea and b/c the show's name. Do it, I'll take 10% for the idea. Do it.
How about a picture of Donald Trump? Don't sharks show professional courtesy? Or maybe just paint a set of gigantic jaws full of teeth. That'll scare 'em real good. They will think their momma is mad at them. Or maybe a big jellyfish, everyone knows sharks don't eat jellyfish. Just sayin'.
