Surfing jennettes pier this morning (9am) and we where all paddling south then I look to my left and I just see this shark fin emerge and flap then disappear. This shark annihilated the fish and only one other dude saw it along with me. This happen maybe 7ft away from me and it was an awesome experience because I have never been that close and just thinking that I could have been the bait was crazy. Also I don't know much about sharks but i'm thinking it might have been a sandbar shark, bullshark, or a blacktip. If you might know comment.

*EDIT* I talked to some fisherman that sounded like they knew a lot and turns out it may have most likely been a bullshark.

They come all the way in sometimes, not so strange, calf deep water is usually enough for them if they aren't too big

How do you know it's the closest you've ever been? You should say "closest I've ever been and known" because chances are 10 of them have swum by you under the water without you knowing.

i'd say it's weird if you were 1 yd offshore, but not ten.

Dune, let me tell you something. People who act all casual, on the internet, aboot sharks are probably the most scared of them. Really, if they saw a dorsal fin they'd be scared .........like really scared. That's how that works. So don't fall for their nonchalance.

Man, I got bumped and lifted slightly out of the water by some thing with some girth in upscale Corolla on spring morning. Crazy adrenaline......... was freaking. The waves were two foot bull**** and I got off my board and was just floating(vertically) there questioning why I even went out. And then BOOM !!

Thought I got hit. Scrambled to shore. Didn't see nothing. Yeah, the water was post-rain murky, but you would think I would have seen something(very close in). I have never been on such a rush and so alert in my life the moments proceeding that happening.

You watch out down there Dune because they are out there. Ahhhh, beautifully polluted and overfished New Jersey..........

on the OBX, you could be standing on dry sand, take a step into the water and be over your head.

    Aboot? yer Canadian?
On the North end of VB I've been skeert many times. Mostly when I try to get 1 more wave and end up out after dark. Once I had drifted into Fart Story, around the Cape Henry Light, and something kept hitting the bottom of my board. My legs were already up and didn't come off until I washed up on the beacg.

I paddled out on saturday next to nags head fishing pier. Was out there for about a hour and half. Looked to my left and saw a dorsal fin going past me about four feet away. Pretty sure if was a black tip after seeing the end of the fin. Just picked my feet up and didn't paddle for about five minutes, other then that just went about my day. If you surf then you know the consequences with sharks, shouldn't shock anyone. Just happy it wasn't a bull shark

Last century I was alone at Nags Head pier when a gray animal, no dorsal fin, with a spoon shaped tail porpoised next to me. I looked in the encyclopedia (Before Computers) and it was indeed a Manatee

I had a big thresher fin pop up near me in Strathmere, but they are no danger. The one I posted above looks scary.

i step on sorts of stuff every week horseshoe crabs, bumb into jellys, huge conch shells, rays but havnt been stung, squid and bait fish. and see 4 foot sharks jump out of the water all the time, it freaks me out for a sec and then im back to surfing. as long as i come out of the water not bitten in half im okay.

this sunday i was surfing at an undisclosed location in LBI and i saw an enormous dorsal fin about 10 yards outside the lineup, like shark week great white size. there were a few other guys in the water, and this one dude on a SUP paddled up to it and was just floating around with it for a while. I saw it swim right up against and underneath his board and was half expecting it to flip him but nothing happened. I ended up seeing all of the fins and this thing just looked enormous. it literally just swam around on the edge of the lineup for about 20 minutes, cruising in the incoming swells. Surprisingly no one got out of the water, and we were all much more fascinated than scared. I think it was just because there were enough guys out, the water was super clear, and that SUPer had an eye on it most of the time, but if I had been alone I probably would have pissed myself because that thing was huge...
