how can i find out if there will be a good shore break for skimboardin... it always shows the wave height but thats always 30-100 ft out
to figure out if certain areas are going to be shorebreak or not on any given date/time, then you need to be familiar with the individual breaks and understand what ingredients make each break. Here are your ingredients (swell direction, swell size, swell period, wind direction, bathymetry - ocean contour). The biggest factor in that list is the last one, the ocean bottom. Spots that go from deep water to shallow water really quick tend to offer more shorebreak waves. But all spots are different, and sandbars change constantly, so its just a matter of being in tuned with your favorite spots. So, when you look at the swellinfo forecast, click "view details" on the time plots, and take a look at the swell height, period, and direction and start compare this to how your breaks behave.
I love the reform type shorebreak wave, but they are few are far between. I remember Ocean City only doing it a couple times, usually on bigger swells...sometimes if you go far enough north in ocean city you will find a close to shore type break. Bethany offers it sometimes, along with south side iri. So have fun searching, but head north of ocean city if that is what you are looking for. Swellinfo gave all great info in the tools you need to find out what you want. Good luck
ya, there's no easy answer. Its mostly about becoming familiar with the different breaks in your area. Some spots may never offer shorebreak, while some spots no matter how big or small will always break close to shore.
Go to DE skim capital Dewey Beach. If you aren't sure about the local breaks & what swells or conditions work for each, just make sure you are away from other surfers/BBERS riding the waves @ that break.
