Hey folks, Got a busted side bite on my 9'2, and they seem kinda hard to find with limited/no selection (futures box). Was thinking about just using the side pair from a thruster kit? Haven't measured to see if the fin box is even the same size, but was wondering if that would even work, or how to find proper side bites, maybe I'm not searching correctly... Thanks all, any thoughts would be appreciated!
"fcs will fit in futures box" But does that make it a good idea? How would it be tight and strong? I guess I would be pretty hesitant to put fcs in a futures box...
A thruster fin will be too large...best sizing would be a rear quad fin but that won't fit the box. Just order a set...simple google search found this....LINk.
The side bits on a longboard are generally smaller- so I wouldn't use just a regular thruster fin. Why not just forget the sidebit on the longboard?
it IS annoying that the only time we hear from da gnome is when $$ is the issue...hey roy...how bout something different from you - cause you're boring. how about a poem celebrating manu?? an ode to indicators? a peep about sheep?
futures came out second and made their box in a dimension that could accommodate their fins as well as fcs on purpose to try and get more shapers using futures. It is a perfect fit. I've been surfing fcs in my future fin slots on my lb with no problems for 12+ yrs.
Funny Man, very funny. You may be on to something here. 1st Wayne debuts his troll persona Jester, then Roy follows suite... hmmm I wonder.
FCS fins will not work in future boxes and will fall out immediately if you can even get them in. Side bites on a log will almost always have a 3/4" base/tang. Thruster side fins will work but are kind of big, may work fine with a smaller center fin. Or cut them down and pretend you are a snarky shaper/designer/legend in your own mind and commence shameless self promoting. Call your favorite surf shop for what you need, if not find them online (foamEZ maybe?). Stock sideys are 3.5 and 3.25 deep I think. Should not cost more than $30 for a pair. Did they break off or just get lost? PM me if you cannot find them but they are readily available. I have seen them with rusted and stripped screws so bad the box had to be replaced. Just make sure to put a paperclip into the grub srew and dig out all the sand so the hex key goes all the way down in or it will strip. A drop of wd40 might help. Good luck
These guys sell two different types of futures longboard side bite fins for $12 a pair. scroll down to the futures fins section. http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/Product_Catalog/SurfSailcom/surfsailcom.html
I have a 6'8 mini longboard type board. I took the side bites out and pushed the center fin all the way up. So much more fun/loose. I did faceplant the first few times trying to dig into a bottom turn. Takes a little getting used to.
