Well it seems I broke my wrist at exactly the wrong time. There was, since the 11th, a flat spell that seemed unending and I broke my wrist right as that changed. So with the upcoming swell event I am trying to find something surf related to do. Anyone else experience this? What do you do? Shoot for friends? pleasure yourself to the waves? cry? paddle out anyways?

    Enlighten me.

dude i feel you, i tore my mcl in my knee at the end of that run of swells in november. i was out for all the good weather and great waves in december. My knee is still jenky and im hoping tomorrow it hangs in there. there will be more swells, dont trouble yourself.

you basically have two options, one is to try and completely ignore the surfing part of your life and focus on something like music etc.

the other is to hang on to the scraps, work out everyday to get back in surfing shape, go down to the beach and sit a the jetty everyday to watch the ocean and swell, take photographs for buds. Still be there, but not be in the lineup, feels me? Its torture but also gratifying to a degree and gives you purpose as well as harmony with the ocean.

The latter might be a better option because then you still have a reason to get out of bed in the morning. You also know EXACTLY what you are or are not missing and don't have to rely on second hand opinions. rest up and dont worry, with all the crazy weather and climate change going on there will be much better waves in your future once your all healed up. nevertheless, none of that means **** when your looking at a forcast you cant charge for the next day.

Sorry to hear brother. A bad wrist wont let you duck dive, let it heal and take your time, and don't go too soon. Take pics, meditate, learn tai chi, and get some rest and rehab. There will always be waves.

tape her up and stop being a p*ssy. Wrist injuries are minor and only affect the weak. Cortezone shot if you're homo. Watch the game tomorrow and periodically ice it for Monday. I have no idea where you are but I'm assuming it's near the ocean so I hope this helps.

Bub, I was snowboarding and got knocked into a tree by a skier
Tre and Sisurf, it's the growth plate so I will definitely just focus on rehab, otherwise my arm might grow short then I'll paddle in circles.
Flurida, yes the game will be watched
    Yank and yp, will do

go for the 2nd x rays tomorrow, glad I came here first. Let's see if the orthopedic doc can help as much as Swellinfo, M.D. Thanks doc

brahhh i learned how to surf with a cast one when I was 12. Its possible, unless you cast goes above the elbow.

get a waterproof one, and stretch that suit over it

me too. Broke my wrist skateboarding when I was 18. Got a fiberglass cast and somehow managed to surf with it on. However, this was during summer in south carolina...if it was winter, probably just would have waited a couple months.

Actually, once I got the cast off, it was more difficult to surf because my wrist was stuck in that stiff position...but with no support. I managed to still surf, though, and the stiffness let up after several months.

I've been out with a broken kneecap for the past 2 months...probably the worst bone you can break because it takes a year or more to heal. Even when(if) it does heal, there's almost always a bunch of complications (cartilage damage/fragments, poor tracking, muscle atrophy, etc) that keep you from bending your knee very far (w/out extreme pain). WEAR KNEE PADS WHENEVER YOU CAN!!!...you can still do a lot sports with upper body injuries, but you can't do any with broken legs.

seems like u know a lot about knee problems.i injured my knee a long time ago when I was a kid and went sledding down a big hill and crashed into a buried shopping cart.i had a family friend who was allegedly a "doctor" look at it he said I tore some ligaments above the knee.i never got it checked out.

but now years its hard to put pressure on my left knee, like trying to squat,or when I drive too long my knee gets some extreme pain and I got to pull over and stretch it out.i looked it up on google said it might be a meniscus tear, never got it checked out professionally,i can by with it but idk if its going to get worse in the future

Yeesh no fun with the knees. I've had some patellar misalignments, osgood schlatters. And it hurts to bump and it looks like I have four knees. I can get by with one arm but one leg would take me out of everything.

I had a broken middle finger. I taped it up super well and surfed with it. It worked out well. But a wrist sounds like it could be pretty tough. Maybe you can just surf prone in the whitewater-- I do that when my legs don't work.

everything I know about knees (not much) I learned in the past 2 months...hurts like hell to barely even walk, so I have nothing else to do but read

actually, one of the things I've read is never get any knee surgery unless it's absolutely necessary. The resulting scar tissue frequently leads to more surgeries and, of course, endless painful rehab. That's why you see a lot of people with cartilage and ligament issues trying to deal with them solely with OTC pain meds.

Kneecaps are the worst though because you have a bone, cartilage and tendon all in one piece. Unlike most other knee problems, kneecap injuries are completely avoidable by just wearing kneepads.

I've had a ligament tear in my elbow for 9 weeks. I figure if Bethany Hamilton can do it, so can I. I just try to favor the other arm when popping up.

Plus I switched to Texas grip.

Let me retract the above "advice." The smart thing to do is not push it, and you're right... find something to take it's place. Art? Music? Books? Long walks on the beach would be a must for me...

I just can't seem to take my own advice, which is probably why I'm still in pain 9 weeks later. Every time I surf... or shovel snow... or do work on my house... it sets me back another few weeks. Stupid...

I don't know, this surf is pretty tempting...

No I'm not gonna risk it, I'll just try to get back as soon as I can. Maybe the x rays show nothing and I'll be cleared to catch the tail end of this swell
