all of you trashing skiing are idiots. First off, all you "hardcore" east coast snowboarders are a joke. Ya, it must be really fun sliding around on icy hills all day, thinking your the ultimate gangster because of it. I snowboard everyday, I live in Steamboat, I shred pow deeper than most of you could imagine on a regular basis. However, once you start leaving the resort and shredding in the backcountry, you will realize how cumbersome a snowboard is. Its to the point that I have taken up skiing, because they just make more sense. Covering flat ground is a breeze skis, great surface area under both feet. On a snowboard you have to unstrap on flat ground, and if your not on packed snow you just punch right through the surface making it impossible to cover any ground. So, you can sit there and bash skiing, but really what it shows is that your some east coast wanna be snowboarder with no mountain knowledge at all. Ha, you probably think you shred cause you can ride "black diamonds," hahahaha. So have fun shredding the butt crust back east, I'm firing up my sled for another day deep in the Colorado backcountry. Oh ya and P.S. Im going Heli skiing (well actually Heli snowboarding) on Friday at Silverton. Wish me luck!!!
sweet post, soo truee east coast mountains pretty much suck, i head up to colorado like twice a year for a couple of weeks its amazing there... also thinking about heading up to big sky montana supposed to be crazy stashes there, tons of unskiied lines, and endless powder...
....... Shayne Pospisil (new jersey) just took 1st place and 50ggggggg's at that red bull contest in NYC
I have a night club card for White Tail, Round Top, and Liberty. I go to Liberty the most because it is the closest. However, White Tail is the best...biggest and steepest. Round Top is not worth any money at all. If you want to spend the most time in the park, Liberty's is the best. As White Tail is more dedicated to trail riding. Is it worth the $? Well...my card cost 170 and i can go any day after 4pm (until 10). I have used the card 25 times so far...making it $7 per time. That is a good deal. However, the prices they charge for lift tickets are insane. I probably wouldnt pay the $40 (or whatever is is) to ski from 4pm to 10. It is a small resort that gets boring after 4hrs. I went last night when they were making snow. That is when it is good (if you have goggles). Man made pow on most of the runs. Being that there was nobody there, it was like a fresh run without tracks everytime. In conclusion if you have the $ try it once.
i just got back from the boat, i go every year for the last 4 years for my wedding anniversary. this year we stayed in the gondola condos, i woke up everyday overlooking gondola square and the mountain. slopeside was stumbling distance away! the pow was better last year, but still got freshies everyday this year and for the record... i have skiied for 30 years(started when i was 3), my family lives close to tremblant surfed for 5 years snowboarded for the last 2 years, and loving it
I've been skiing since i was 3, and I'm 21 now. I switched over to snowboarding for about 6 years or so. IT was definitely fun, especially when the scene was exploding and everyone who was anyone was strapping on a board. But I don't know, I guess I hit the wall or plateaued, but the excitement died for me. Then once the twin-tip started being massively produced I hopped back on two planks and I really think that the progression happening on skis since then is by far more interesting than on snowboards. I ride at mountain creek in NJ, so i'm a park-rat by default, but I mean even there, a place that is dominated by snowboarding, I just think that the things being done on skis right now are just as stylish as snowboarding, (if not more), which i know people critique skiers for not being as smooth in the air. (I'm not talking about chucks trying to ski fast while snowplowing, but rather someone throwing a switch 720 etc.) Also, skiing moguls is fun for days on end, which is something that is (for the most part) pretty miserable on a snowboard. I'm really not trying to chime in and say whether one is better than another, just trying to shed some light on my experiences with both. Granted its a surfing site so many of you guys will call me a poledragger or whatever, but ive done both and for now I'm sticking with two planks.
Skiing on the east coast is much like surfing, its all about the weather and timing. If its been cold and at or below freezing for at least 1 week or preferably two weeks the skiing/riding or what ever your passion will be decent. However being that it likes to get hot here and rain good conditions can be destroyed in one day. Sometimes I wonder how the local three mountains stay in business. The amount of money to cover the slopes in fake/made snow must be astronomical, and then to see it all melt away 2 days later? Ive skied out in SLC Utah and that completely spoiled me. The terrain there is just awesome, if I had the money Id go west every damned year. But like someone else said, its damned expensive to go out west, but worth every penny you spend though. I actually dont mind Roundtop, Im a skier and have been doing it so long my first rentals were on metal skis and spademan bindings. The only snow board was a snurfer a yellow plank with staples on the top and rope handle! Im too old to learn new tricks, so Ill stick with what I know. As for Roundtop, even on a weekend if you go all the way to the left side to the so called "expert" slopes there are two lifts over there and I have never waited more than 2 minutes in the lift line. Plus it has a foot rest! Which for skiing really makes a difference, to be able to not have your feet dangling with all the weight of a ski cutting the blood flow off to your feet. East coast skiing is what it is, and can be more often than not an inclined ice skating rink.
Yeah well said. I go to school in MD, went out to Liberty one night last year and was moderately impressed by the park but that was about it. I went to Whitetail last week and plan on heading out there tomorrow, was pretty impressed by the vertical and the moguls. Take it for what its worth, should have went to UVM instead.
I also loved skiiing as a kid and was startin to get the hang of it but then my mom tore her acl getting off the lift at the top of the mountain which really freaked her out. My family has only gone skiing once or twice since then, and that was probably almost 10 yrs. ago. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to try snowboarding, but I'm sure I'd like it. As long as I'm outdoors being active I can have fun... I like to hike
