Kelly is correct when he says sunblock is bad for you. It might block damaging uv rays, but it can also cause multiple cancers. Don't use it. Make your own. It,s easy. Coconut oil + bees wax + zinc oxide poweder. It's cheaper, non toxic, and just as good as the leading brands. What got me was his so called belief in supporting the things he endorses. I.E. his main sponser is Quiksilver, whose products are made mostly in China, Korea, and Vietnam. Which means that Quiksilver (and Kelly) support slave labor. The average daily pay in those countrys is $1 to $2 dollars a day. Which makes their profit margin about 500%. Not only do they cheat their labor force, they cheat the consumer with overly inflated prices. $70 for a pair of trunks is a total rip-off when you consider it only cost them less than $5 a pair. Support fair trade or American made. I don't know about the rest of you, but my work situation has been declining the past couple of years. All do to the free trade agreements that have been enacted.

I use organic sunblock. Its about double the price, but worth it knowing I'm not baking chemicals into my skin.
    Check your health food stores.

just limit your time in the sun. zinc oxide isn't ANY safer. in fact its pretty toxic. wear a hat. use sunscreen.

dudeman, you are correct when you say zinc oxide is toxic. it is toxic if ingested orally, or if it is in the form of a nano particulate, which the skin will absorb. however, large particulate zinc oxide will not be absorbed by the skin, making it safe to use. your normal sunscreens ( bull frog, head hunter, vertra, etc) are bad. you need at least 30 minutes of sun exposure with out suncreen a day for your ample vitamin D. after that you need something, and hats are inaffective when the waves are big, unless you can deal with the straps and floppy visers in your face.

Ofcourse what you beleive is up to you but there are no valid studies done by medical professionals to support your claims. Nothing but rumors made by people and companies trying to sell books and or their own all natural sunblock products. Sure the products you say are dangerous to humans really are.......if ingested. Here is an article from skincancer.org from a prominent dermatologist....http://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/ask-the-experts/does-sunscreen-cause-cancer ...... I have a dermatologist as well as an oncologist and have talked to both about this subject in great detail and with their recomendations I'll keep useing the sunblock. The top three proven sunblocks are NoAd, Bullfrog( made by a surfer ) and Neutrogena. One of the biggest problems is you have to reapply frequently (40 to 80 mins.) which no one does. Do your own research and come to the best conclusion you can with the real and misinformation out there and do the best you can...... I wish nothing but good sessions and no cancers to you. Ive been there.....There's nothing fun about it.

Like Erock said in the original kelly slater interview post...I use Waterman's. I experimented with several different waterproof sunscreens in the past and found that the only two that really didn't wash off were waterman's and vertra. It may be toxic, i have no clue, but it sure is less toxic and painful than the alternative. Being fair skinned and spending countless hours out in the ocean is a recipe for disaster, but Waterman's seems to curb a lot of the burn. Just my $.02.

So if the sun causes cancer and sunscreen also causes cancer, aren't we all just screwed either way?

    A. No i'm not a dermatologist, but the scientific reaserch is there to prove that most sunblocks do cause cancer. not skin cancer, but internal organ cancers from the absorbtion of the chemicals through the skin. Have you heard of "nano particulates"? they are in many sunblocks. Also, I did'nt hear that eating raw organic produce causes cancer. If you have, please let me know.
    B. What i'm typing on was made in this country. Seattle in fact. pugentsystems.com
    C. romney, obama, ron paul are all trying to wreck our economy. it's call the "Trans Pacific Partnership".
    D. do your homewrok.

Do your own research and educate yourself. there are valid studies that show that the chemicals in your sunblock are absorbed through your skin. In your link, they suggest the studies proving harmful effects of sunscren as "JUNK SCIENCE", and base their conclusions by FDA guidlines. don't be misled by the FDA. it's a corrupt organization run by people within the pharmacutical and chemical industry. they don't care about your health, they only care about $$$$$.

Tried your pugentsystems.com on 6 different search engines and got nothing. Ofcourse the FDA is corrupt......Every part of government is, always has been and always will be......get over it. I'm still waiting for a link to a published Medical paper that says sunblock is absorbed through your skin and causes cancers. Published in a medical journal.....not on the internet. Anyone can post anything on the internet and say its true or false. Life is full of catch 22s but until you show me published medical proof about the sunblock i'll have to stand my ground.......Show me the published studies.

sorry but it was a typo http://www.pugetsystems.com/

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potential_health_risks_of_sunscreen

as far as finding a medical paper proving that the ingrediants in sunblock are absorbed into the skin, i don't know. i can't find it on the internet. i also can't find any medical papers on the dangers on chem trails and the effects on the human body. nor can i find medical papers on the dangers of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in our foods. or the flouride in our tap water. but if you have not heard, none of these things are good for the human body, or the environment. i started this blog to help educate people to a safe alternative to chemical based sunscreens. if you want to take the risk and go the chemical route, that is your choice. there is however safer and just as effective alternatives. happy safe surfing.

sorry your wrong. I myself used to fly. Started at age 13 with the Air Force Auxillary the Civil Air Patrol.. that dose not make me or you an authority on the chem trail controversy. but the evidence is out there. Bill Gates, Monsanto, etc. There are US patents for the stuff. Do the research. and yes, i am one of those cats who does not trust what the government tells me. tell me why then the US does not require the labeling of foods containing GMOs. Many coutries are required by law to label their foods containing GMOs. some have even banned GMO food crops altogether. I don't think over 50 countries would do something like that because of some conspiracy theory.
