I'm learning to surf and today's small waves in Assateague were just about what I needed. Still working on standing on the board but I'm catching the waves and getting used to the drop. I paddled out last Sunday in bigger waves at high tide and didn't do so well but at least I was out there!

Thanks to all the local surfers out there who have been so supportive of me trying to learn. I definitely appreciate the mellow, tolerant vibe. I have to say, whether it's big waves or small, and whether I'm standing on the board or just getting up on my knees I love being out there. There's just nothing better.

Stick with it even through the discouragement. Are you surfing through winter? You should. You'll be ahead of the game come spring.

if you can surf every chance you get. its not about being a ripper or not... its about enjoying the ocean and the vibe.. and respect

I'm new too, just bought my first board :) I've paddled out a few times and ridden a few, but haven't gotten to pop up yet. Might go out today for a couple of hours...would definitely like to be better before the season starts next year so I don't look too much like a fool!!

Best advice is just to keep paddling out...be respectful, put in your water time and the rewards will come.

I'll try to surf during the winter. We'll see how long I can last. I used to live on the central coast of california and body boarded. The water was always in the 50 -60 range. Not sure I can go colder than that.

They do make wetsuits for colder water. ;)
