I wanna hear some thoughts on this. So I was surfin in deal yesterday, fun waves btw, and a set came through. Guy took off deep on it and I was further down after a big section that I thought he wouldn't make. I dropped in and the guy didnt even try to make the section, but I pulled right out just to have a little respect for his wave, he pulls out way behind on it, (obviously wouldn't have made the section), and gets all aggro on me. Who's in the wrong here becuase I wasn't having it from him. If he was so mad about me dropping in then why didn't he try to make the section and push me off the wave.
He probably hesitated because he did not know what you were going to do. You never know ones skill level and it is not worth it to try and push past someone and get injured. If I see someone drop in on me, I assume the wave is blown and will generally punch through the back especially beach breaks.
just do you... if he wasnt gonna make it, dont pay him any attention. NOYA or YONN (you owe nobody nothin)
This. No snake if the kook can't make. But I've seen dudes make sections that I thought were impossible. Also I've pulled back when I though they would make it, and watched them blow it. If someone's getting agro about you pulling out, then they probably can't surf for crap anyway. An experienced surfer has seen it all before and recognizes a "my bad bro" pullout when they see one.
^^Pretty much agree with this. Does help to know some ones ability. So what's the term for checking who has game and who doesn't.
Generally yes. But.....once I watched a friend of mine drop in and not make the section twice in a row on a big day (8-10 foot faces) in Delray on a winter north swell. He had a longboard and is 6'6" tall, so he was outpaddling me to the peak each set. Third set, same scenario, I bradpitted him. He made the section, our boards collided, he had to go home to get another one, and I had to pay for his ding repair.
ish can happen but you did the honorable thing by owning up to it. That's the problem with a judgement call. Definitly more at risk on the big and honkin' days. Did he throw your chit in the water?
some kook on a brand new, bright white JS shorty dropped straight down and in on me the other day. I was going way too fast to slow down and I ran over his board....CRUNCH! my fin went all the way from the rail to the stringer about 6 inches from the nose. Not a scratch on my 5'5 Sled Zeppelin. He was like: "dude you gotta pay for my board", and I was like "haha sorry". I wasn't sorry. Moral of the story: sometimes you gotta pay, sometimes ya don't
I've been in both positions many times, (more so the one taking off deep) The only thing that really sends me into a rage/aggro is when someone does something that puts my board or my body at risk, which you did not come even close to doing. My thoughts are that (assuming you are a local from your screenname) if it was a longtime local that you did it to, then thats ****ty and you should know better, if it was some blow-in from PA or NY then **** him, you're a local and thats tough **** for him. PS snaking is paddling around someone you pulled a drop-in
Had a similar experience long time ago. Kook on brand new board shoulder hopped in on a wave while I was getting barreled and then fell right in front of me. Ran right over him.He says "you dinged my brand new board" and I said well it's obvious you've never surfed before and you're the one that dinged the board. If you wanna kick my 8ss fine but I ain't paying for your mistake. Never saw him again.
just part of surfing. You were in control and apologized. I had a similar thing happen a while back. Other guy looked too deep, so I dropped in. Immediately looked back and saw he made it, so I kicked out. Waves were reeling long that day (plus, he was on a longboard), so he coulda kept going a got a bunch more turns...but, no, he kicks out right after me and starts b!tching and whining. Younger guy, good surfer, but he's there every time I paddle out (no responsibilities) and his boards look brand new...obviously a rich, spoiled brat that, apparently, thinks he owns the surf spot as well.
