I recently discovered whiskey militia and i keep seeing that there are plenty of forum snowboards as well as Burtons. I am trying to pick up snowboarding and I was wondering what size board would be good for someone around 5'5" and 130 pounds. I want a board that can do jibbing as well as freestyle riding. I was wondering would it be dumb to buy a board online not knowing a lot, but my friends said that Burton is the best but i read that they run a little big.
boo for burton I would stay away from burton and I will tell you why. A kid wants to start snowboarding, so mom gets him decked out with burton gear from head to toe. Most new people to snowboarding rock burton stuff. So unless you want to be associated with being a newb, I woud stay away from burton. Also, their stuff is wayy over priced. I just picked up surfin two years ago, but im pretty sure a burton snowboard is like an al merrick surfboard: everyone and their mother has got one. (burton owns channel islands now if you didnt know). If you are 5'5 130, I would say you should ride a 151 or something a little smaller. Forum makes good boards, but burton recently picked them up as well. Rome, Stepchild, Libtech, Ride and Gnu all make real good ****. You will get a lot of advice if you go to a boardshop, but there are some good deals online, especially on dogfunk.com. You can talk to one of their customer service reps online and they will guide you on getting what setup would best suit you. Hope that helps

thanks that helps out a lot. i just wanna get a board this summer because i tried getting one last year in season but they were way too expensive. but i may have to wait a month or so plus the Burton or forum would be cheaper for me and thats what im looking for with all my money going into getting my drivers license
get the gnar danny kass pro modle you cant go wrong. i have had 2 of these boards and i love them. great flex great edge. super fun board. and if you care about what you look like it will help you there too
As I've worked for a ski/snowboard shop the past 10 years, I can tell you that Burton's are not over priced. Yes, the top of the line board "The Vapor" may be, the other boards are completely comparable. They have the most intense R&D department ever, and their boards have tons of technology put into them. They have been in the business a long time. It comes down to preference, but don't stay away from it because of the name. If they have a board you want, get it. No one will consider you a newbie for riding Burton, that's ridiculous. Just look at their team, and that should be enough proof. Saying that, Forum has made a huge come back, but I would stay away from their bindings. Buy what you like and don't worry about labels. Burton and other companies have boards for jibbing, etc, so just buy what you like. If you're new to snowboarding check out the Burton Hero, its a rockered board with some serious flex, it's good for learning, allows you to initiate turns easily, and the flex is great for jibbing. Only downfall are the expensive EST bindings. There are plenty of other jibbing boards out there, Rome Agent, Stepchild JibStick, Salomon Sanchez, K2 WWW (rockered or not), Burton Twin or Hero, and others.
very true rocked a burton custom x last season and it was bomb proof, utah to pa its rock solid....my friend has the hero he has been riding his entire life ridden hundreds of boards and swears by the hero not so much rocker as the other companies just the correct amount.
Should measure b/w your chin and nose. If you want to ride in the park get something a bit smaller like a 149. Easier to spin etc. Beginners should get something a little smaller anyway. Burton is a good brand just a overpriced. There are so many other brands that are very good quality. If you find a board go to the webstie and read up on the specs and what the board is good for. they aren't bad boards, they were super popular this year since they came out with the reverse camber stuff. don't last forever but that shouldn't be a problem at your level, and the use you will most likely put into it. can't say its the best board for cruising, but it will definitely work fine for that too
between those sizes i would get the 145 for you, being on the east coast you don't need a terribly long board. the 151 would work fine though if you wanted that. im 6' 170 pounds and ride a 152. last year i rode a 157
Check out Never Summer boards. All they make is boards (and T-Shirts). They are a core company based out of Colorado. That's all I ride. You may have to order one online though, because they are handmade and difficult to find at a shop. www.neversummer.com
