Good, bad, i dont know when i surf in the summer i surf at indian river, and it gets super crowded. And then with the removal of the sandbars in ocean city im sure it will get even more crowded, its gonna be bad. I dont wanna destroy a board, so i was thinking about getting a softtop. Discuss, do they ride well.. differences, advantages, disadvantages.. gooo thanks guys
You only get in the water during the summer? If so then it might be best to get a soft top. Removal of sand bars really won't make OC more crowded, breaks will be worse with replenishment, not as many people will come. IDK how you think you will destroy a board but soft tops are more for beginners and maybe if you don't have enough money to spend. What type of soft top are you looking to get
Nah, i surf in winter. and i surf at indian river- which means that there will be OC surfers at indian river. There are ****tons of people at indian river, my longboard has gotten holes in it a couple times now, and im looking at more of a shorter board. I already got 3 boards, i just was thinking if i should invest in a soft top for the extra crowded days Ocean city maryland btw
softtops are the ****. definitely get one theyre only a couple hundred and its fun in shorebreak because you dont need to care about the board too much. Theyre also usually pretty thick so you can get it pretty short and still get into waves with little to no effort. It's kinda like cheating but its so much fun cus its a little chip that rides well if you ride it well
How do they ride? They ride like $h!T, but they can be a blast in the summer just for kicks. For the most part, it's the fins that make them suck. Depending on what you get, you might be able to put good fins in one and make it ride a lot better.
off topic but why even bother with IRI? I mean assateague is closer to OCMD than IR, has better waves, and isnt so crowded you would have to ride a softtop to battle the kooks dropping in on you. Im just curious...IRI seems like such a zoo in the summer. Oh an i agree with the guy above ^^ if the waves are decent and lined up, the soft top is gonna feel like a turd.
yeah i live near OCMD, but really closer to IRI, and i tend to ride there more often. Also, Assateague doesnt have good waves until the swell is at least chest high, even then they are more like longboarding waves. but ill be going to assateague alot during this coming summer
i ride me a longboard foam board when its small or its dead low and just big closeouts. the reason is theyre so thick that i can sit way outside get in the wave really early and make the closeout section, and then when its really small or crowded why mess up my shortboard when i can paddle out on a faom board and ding the foamy and not care. people will laugh at first but once you get good like how ive gotten good they will be amazed as they are trully hard to ride but once you get used to it theyre really fun. just remember they wont carve like a shortboard as tight but they will throw some spray.
A Quality soft top (one that surfs close to a real board) aint cheap. I buy a used beater like someone else said. Cheap soft tops definitely ride different and in my opinion you can pick up bad habits from riding them. Used ones can be water logged (regardless what the say - they are a sponge).
that is you best bet or just buy a used regular board that you dont give a rats ass what happens to it and at the end of the summer sell it to some Grom and make some of you money back
dont do that. if you want a cheap board get a pop out from ron jon or something but a softtop must be terriable. i actually have never tried one but from the looks all you do is ride a wave straight in and they will float on flat water.
http://www.catchsurf.com/index.php/surfboards-by-y.php I have a beater, one and super one. All SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fun, in any condition. they also make the swizzle which a long softop. maybe a little more that crappy softtops but worth every bit. You get what you pay for. the beater can also have a fin, if one desires. Super one has fcs fins as well. check it out, summer or winter def increase the fun factor.
