A local shaper is never going to get rich unless he is really,really good or markets himself the right way.
There is PLENTY of money in the surf industry. Pros get paid millions of dollars by sponsors. Volcom sold for 3/4 of a BILLION dollars. Look at local shapers who turned their businesses into empires like CI and Mayhem. There are surf related travel industries and the gear is very expensive. Billabong over extended themselves by buying so many companies, similar to what Quik did. If you do it right, there is alot of money to be made.

 

What do you think alot of top pros are driving around in dip****? Plenty of those guys are living it up with nice stuff, believe me.
