so, uh, things have been *really* ****ing weird around here lately. so in the interest of fanning some stoke, here's a little video about my favorite shaper:
Couple observations... The guys are total artists... think like artists, work like artists, surf like artists. Nice shot of the elevated wing (e-wing) at about 4:25. 10" half round convex surform blade for concaves... why didn't I think of that! I want one...
yea, i love the phrase, "never for money, always for love" they use & the "peace" that malcolm signs on each board. the philosophical underpinnings of the bonzer concept go so much deeper than "hey, we think this works better so you should try it", & that makes them so much more than "just" surfboard builders. the e-wing is fantastic...love it on my octa! the thing really does boogie up & down the face of a wave quickly. i'm kinda curious to try one on a more traditional hpsb type board.
Always interested in the e-wing and the only non-bonzer I have seen 'em on are the VS shadows...NJ you feel it has more release through turns or is it just allowing the wider tail to move around a bit easier?
people who don't support a local shaper should be pulled from the lineup, doused in gasoline and set on fire.
not many people use them...prob. b/c it's a PITA to glass & sand. i haven't ridden an octafish w/out the e-wing, so hard to say, but i'd say my octa has more release & responsiveness than other boards i've ridden that were similar in concept & intent.
oxnard. but i'm not sure i'd call malcolm "small time". maybe in comparison to a brand like ci or lost, i guess.
Well I mean if every board in your quiver isn't local, I think a beating or a stern talking to would suffice over setting someone on fire.
What is the allure of a bonzer? I mean they look really cool, but what do they add to the experience?
they're faster than a thruster or quad (IMO), negate the need for the ugly "double pump bottom turn", hold higher & tighter in the pocket & barrel, & favor the type of surfing i enjoy most, namely high speed, full rail power surfing. i'm not foolish enough to think i actually surf like that, but the design encourages that. some people (mostly those who've never ridden one) will say that bonzers ride like a "super charged single fin", but that's pretty much bogus.
Well that's the best reason. I'm lucky to have had great experiences with a shaper in town. "We are a verb" cool philosophy. "We aren't who we think we are, we are what we do" Thanks for sharing, good stuff.
more like just a super charged surfboard. i think you can take almost any shape and make it a bonzer and it just super charges it.
