so you all think this is not true? If so, you are all naive. Keep doing the things you all do, and when you make a miraculous difference, I will say "you're right, and I was wrong".
nattering nabobs of negativism.... Then you're going to have to fess up with a big MEA CULPA because not only has public outcry made an impact in this situation (the primary legislators have vowed that they will continue, but they are now getting negative responses from their colleagues), but the public outcry against the banks when they wanted to impose fees on ATMs ended that policy that was going to be enacted by Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Chase, among others. The reality is that the individual can often feel hopeless and emasculated by the power of big money, as it seemed to be in this case because of all the media corporations pushing and paying the big bucks to get senators and congressmen to pass these restrictive bills. (They wanted to make it so they wouldn't have to sue each individual who illegally posted their material, and this was going to save them money and time… it was big media that was being lazy in this case…). It is easy (and I'm sure it feels cool) to be cynical, but the reality is when people speak up in numbers, it makes a big difference. one crisis at a time.....
This entire issue is a result of laziness on the part of those in the intellectual property industry who support these bills--music companies, publishers, etc. They have lobbied these proposals in an attempt to change the way copyright law works and have the government perform a function that is legally their burden. Example: Any one person or entity's rights are only protected if they are exercised. If you don't exercise your rights you lose them--this is how it works. The burden of prosecuting and limiting pirating falls on the owners of intellectual property. It is their job to track their property and make sure it is not improperly used, although this can be costly and time consuming. So, in an effort to reduce their overhead, they have lobbied the government to do the legwork for them. This is Crony Capitalism in yet another form in that they are attempting to "privatize profits and socialize losses." As a free market capitalist myself, I am categorically opposed to this and my actions in opposing this are an effort to block the unintended consequences that would likely reach through many more industries in addition to the web.
quick summary of SOPA for the lazy: https://www.eff.org/sites/default/files/One-Page-SOPA_0.pdf more indepth reading: http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/technical-examination-of-sopa-and.html sopa can not pass or the internet as we know it will drastically change
The A.S.S. Association (Appalachian Surf Sliders) is vehemently opposed to this outrageous violation of our basic right of free speech. Erock is right. The increasing number of attempts by the powers that be to socialize and control society need to be checked. I called my congressman as well. I'm worried about what will be left for the kids.
Like I said before if this stuff passes places such as the swell info forums wouldn't exist. Links to "illegal" sites would cause them to get sued and potentially get the owners in a nice jail cell for a few years. I don't think they are willing to risk that for 1 loser who wants the screw them over.
Well the results are in, check them out. That is what we did. Congrats They dropped the SOPA/ PIPA acts for the time being. http://www.sopastrike.com/numbers
A new threat..... I just stumbled upon this one.... I really don't know what is intended from it but apparently it is worse than SOPA/ PIPA. I'll look it up and get some info for everyone. http://investmentwatchblog.com/thre...uage-that-greatly-threatens-all/#.Txw33G8V2LK
