After a day of surfing my sternum gets really sore. Admittingly, i have not been surfing all my life. I just started on a regular basis about two years ago or so. Anyways, after several hours out in the water i notice the next day that my sternum feels bruised. Anyone else deal with this and what have you done to eliminate the pain. Thanks, Brian
Yes it happens if you haven't laid on your board in a while. Basically, go surf more. It will go away. Think of it like not weight training for a while then getting back into it. That first sore is going to be a lot worse than the next few because your body is not used to it like it once was.
Try gluing a throw pillow on your board. Just kidding, smae thing happens to me if I have not been on the board in a while. Bouncing up and down and over waves bruises your ribs and sternum so they will be sore. Only way to get rid of it is to push through and like superburst said after a while it will go away. Guess, i got just MAN the hell up and get out there more! Thanks guys at least i know it isn't just me
Try not rearing up on your sternum when your paddling. Flatten your chest onto your board and bend at the neck. Make sure the part of your chest that's above the sternum is making solid contact with the board, distributing your weight more evenly.
Iv never had pain, but my sternum cracks after a long surf. I just stretch my arms up to the sky, then down and back and I hear and feel a loud crack/pop from my chest. It feels good
That used to happen to me and It eventually just went away, I ignored it. It happens more in the summer since nj is mostly surfing in the summer
Same issue...Possible that your Xiphoid Process sticks out too far and is causing your problem, eventually you should build a callous on the skin that will cushion it. I personally went and bought a 2 mil rash guard and that has enough padding that it stays protected. Good Luck
Try putting your for forehead on the board as you paddle, thats what I do during marathon sesions when I start to get sore, just watch out for that sneaker set.
Braddahs, yous guys need some pectoral muscles. Sore sternum? Man, they got products in the ladies' aisle for that type of complaint.
I used to surf with a dude named Brian back in the day and he was born without 1 of his pecs. Maybe this is Brian.
Mine pops all the time, always wondered what the hell was going on. It does feel pretty good afterwards though. When it happens it sounds real bad though.
The pain may subside, temporarily, when u get older it's like any old injury. It may haunt you. Check it out. wykensurf.com a padded rash guard manufacturer. Slim, effective design. Worked for me
