South Beach, FL surf?

south beach gets very good about 5 days a year. If you happen to catch that day, then you'll be stoked. Chances are you wont, but it can definitely happen in March. Check Swellinfo and post a forum inquiry before you are about to leave, and I can fill you in on whether its worth bringing your board.

 

any idea of how daytona gets in mid-march? heading down for a week and would love to get some warm ones

 

I lived in St. Augustine for awhile & daytripped down to Daytona once. Had my gear in the car and scored some unexpected peelers. Definately your average beach break. If theres swell forcasted I'd go a little bit south and do some exploring...

If your driving, and not on any kind of schedual, I suggest you stop by St. Augustine. It's by far my favorite place in America, very artistic w/ loads of forward thinkers living there, and passing thru.

 

Don't really know about St. Augustine. It might be nice. But, we always passed it on our monthly road trips to FL from Charleston when I was in college. If you do get a chance to travel from Daytona...... then, by all means head south. Sometimes central FL has more exposure to the passing swells. "Second Light" is pretty popular and decent. Indialantic has a little more power then Cocoa and seems to be a hotspot for FL Atlantic Univ girls. Further south you have Stuart Rocks then Spanish House followed by Sebastian. Spanish house is by far my favorite (I caught it firing & empty 4 trips in a row - one of which was a springbreak trip) and a little less crowded then Sebastian Inlet. There is a really cool campground near there called Long Point w/ water front campsites that have electric hookups and nice showers. Worth a stay for a night when its on and firing (just get there early or make a reservation, it always sells out & is super close to all the surfing you could handle). Hope this helps. we're staying in daytona but we're driving down so yea we'll have a couple SUV's; traveling wont be a problem. i figured heading south would be best, thanks for the info on the spots

 

I was not mentioning St. Augustine for the surf, don't get me wrong there. Mediocre at best, nothing worth stopping for. I mentioned it purely for the artistict aspect... the section I was talking about was across the bridge from flagler beach, downtown SA, very touristy, but really, some amazing art galleries and people. If you go by to kill some time, stop by the Shark Shack (they have two little sunglass joints down there), the people who own it have a surf team. Great folks, I had the chance to work for them for a bit. My fault if there was any confusion, should have specified.

When I said a little bit south, I meant from Daytona.

 

I'll second that. St. Augustine is a cool little town, and actually one of my favorite areas that I a surfed in the Florida.

south beach is really fun when there's waves, i've had it head high and it was surprisingly powerful, north swell BUT the consistency sucks compared to the rest of Florida north of the bahama shadow, it was also really fun with a 20mph east(onshore) wind even though it was only over a 90 mile fetch it was rippable waist-rib chop and fun, it gets incredibly crowded to the point where it is a joke, there are some other spots in miami that are "good" that have less crowds, i liked indialantic more consistent and fun sandbars saw a fisherman hook a 7ft shark there though that jumped out of the water 50 ft from where some kid was paddling out so watch out
