There's a few of us around these here parts, i'm born and raised from the area, but Pops is from Gloucester MA, Mom's from Myrtle Beach SC. Been here going on 33 years, Southern hospitality isn't dead, but it's definitely a melting pot of Northerners in certain areas, such as Boca and West Palm
There has got to be more to it. The county Sheriffs are first on the moonshine delivery list, round here.
I am aware that there are nice people all over the world. I have been to many places in this great nation though, and I can tell you, South Carolina and Georgia have a different charm and vibe. People who you may have only met once or twice will open their homes to you, invite you fishing, invite you and your family to a barbeque, help you fix your truck, patch a roof... People are just pretty cool down here. My point was, there is nothing like having fresh, wild hog that your neighbor shot in the morning, sippin on some moonshine and then watching an epic bowl game with guys who live for Clemson. Tiger tattoos, flags on their 250s... just a different scene for me.... And we have had the "cuisine" on here many times, and it is a blind comment to say that cuisine down here is not up to par. I would put a handful of good Charleston, HHI and Savannah restaurants up against anything you will find in NYC or SF or Chicago.... If you had sh*(y food down here, you just werent dialed in. You didn't know where to go. You probably should have asked a local. Ask Robert Irvine why he has two restaurants on this tiny island. I have 3. If you think the cuisine down here is now good, come down and visit me. I would put all three of my menus out to you and would blow your mind. All fresh, local seafood and produce. Chef's that are born and raised down here.... You can bash the surf down here, but dont bash the cuisine.... Having managed restaurants for 10 years in San Diego, I can tell you 8 out of 10 restaurants just on HHI are just as good if not better than anything in LA or SD.... Open your mind... Just cause you had the sh**s from a roadside mom and pop BBQ joint off the 95 doesn't mean its all bad. Its probably on you for entering questionable establishments. If there is a B or a C on the door, I wouldnt recommend stopping there. I have lived in Bmore, DC, spent time in Philly and NY and I can tell you, every one of those places has plenty of SH** food and beverage. There are great places and sh** places everywhere.... But like I said, Charleston, Savannah and HHI can blow your mind. We have professional athletes, pro golfers, celebrities, politicians, CEOs etc that live down here and will drop $500 on a meal for 2 any day of the week. I can vouch for all the back country spots, but when Michael Jordan (Wexford Plantation) is down here vacationing, he aint eating at Wendys.
+1 this pretty much sums up all of my thoughts. The food down here, if you know where to go, can be some of the best you've ever eaten..
Food has improved everywhere in the USA the past 15-20 years. Used to be there were limited choices in DC in the early 90's - - now the capital region ranks amongst the best in the world on several culinary fronts. And the craft beer explosion in the USA has been awesome. USA has left the world behind on this one. Brew may want to take a turn on this topic. But, man, every place I travel has their own micro-brews, regional breweries & distribution from larger craft beer producers. Sure beats the he!! out of the days when it was Bud, Mich or Schlitz. A person has to be in a real pit of a town to be unable to locate good food in the USA these days. And with the easy research / ton of info available on the 'Net, it's simple & efficient to locate quality food. Heck, as an example of how far the art of dining out has come in the USA when you think about it even a Whole Paycheck grocery store has tastier & better-quality prepared foods than a lot of restaurants did 15 years ago.
i am not even getting into this crap. i will sit this one out. we already had northern food vs southern food.
