Gonna be moving to the hilton head area in a few weeks, just been wondering how the surf is there thru the year. Currently living in the jacksonville/EI area. Also how cold does the water there get, can you get by thru the winter on a nice 3/2 and some boots? Any tips, good breaks would be awesome thanks!
I have surfed on Hunting Island which is near Beaufort and checked out other beaches around there. Keep a longboard or funboard in the quiver and hope for hurricane swell. Also might check surfline on the web and see what they say.
Surf Info on Hilton Head Welcome! Most surfers go to Burkes Beach which is about the only public surfing area access. Most rich fat golfers own the whole coast. There are plenty of other breaks after you meet people who live behind the plantation gated neighborhoods. The only Shaper and best Surf Shop is Sunnydaze on 278 north end by the crossisland toll road. The other shops are on the south end and cater to tourists and their need to wear surfer clothes. The waves are small - there is a sand atoll surrounding the east coast of the island and we are the lowest place on the coast. Our surf averages 1-3'. You will need a long board. There is a lot of kitesurfing and stand up paddling beginning here. If you have any other questions please write me at SCislander@hargray.com. Thanx, Rusty
Cold water on HHI Water is very hot in July - September. Sometimes like soup in August. We gradually go to rash guards and neoprene tops or spring suits around December possibly Nov. water eventually gets down to about 55 so a 3/2 with booties is fine all winter. Gloves are needed around Jan & Feb for the weak.
Surfline??????????? If you check Surfline for here you will see 1-2' no matter what time of year it is or what our swell is. We are not a known place for surfing so Surfline doesnt givasht about us. After Swellinfo , I check the Grays Reef Buoy, http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41008 , and MagicSeaweed.com which always is lower on their wind actuals.
