Hey guys whats going on? Im gonna be traveling down to this area in late February or early March. I was wondering what mil wetsuit i need if any, and if i could get some advice on breaks etc. Any info would be much appreciated.... thanks
I'm not a local, but I looked at some archived data from the buoy right off the St. Augustine coast. The water temps in mid winter, are generally around upper 50's to low 60's, but can drop down into the low 50's (like it is right now). I would say, generally, you are going to want a 3/2, and maybe boots. Hopefully some locals will chime in.
Ive got friends in st augi, and I can agree with the above post 100% even though Ive only been in SA once during winter, it was, without a doubt, much colder than Im used to surfing central/south FL where water temps tend to stay in the upper 60's and rarely drop into the 50's, and if it does its usually only for a day or 2. blowhole and A st are 2 spots I surfed when there, along with Vilano which is a direct onshore pounding wave (Ive surfed it 2-3' overhead no more than 20 yrds off dry sand)
water temp here in jax beach is mid to low 50s, very cold. we have an el nino winter this year so i expect the water temps to stay fairly low till atleast late march early aprili have a 3/2 booties and gloves and im good. but local surf shops have ordered mass amounts of 4/3 because our water was in the mid 40's for a week or 2. i dont really surf auggy too much but when i do its vilano A street or the pier, like other dude said. and hes also right about vilano, i caught it about 2 ft overhead a month ago and got some of the biggest barrels ive had in about 3-5 ft of water. scary
