Hey guys, I'm studying abroad in the Spring (feb-june) at either the University of Sydney or the University of Auckland. Both have huge positives for me, and it seems both have a lot of surfing options. I was wondering if anyone of you guys are familiar with the surf in either of these spots... Would love some insight. (And yes, I plan on doing and indo trip...)
OZ has better surf. i've done both. if you go to OZ you MUST buy a car....or your trip is a swing 'n a miss.... try crown street in sydney; you can buy a car complete with insurance and registration.
Ok cool thanks. Seems like Auckland gets more longer period Southern Hemi swells tho? Though Sydney area seems pretty consistent just a bit crowded in the central area.
Lucky. Something I wish I nabbed in my undergrad. Good luck man! Mom's sister spent a summer in the land of the kiwis, said it was wild. She spent a few in Perth as well, apparently it's like being in America but not quite as uptight. They like to party. This was years ago, who knows what it is now, looks like a major city but cleaner. Either way, she's very well traveled, and new Zealand is the place she said she would go out of her way to visit again. Get to a rugby game. Don't play though, your surf career will be put on hold in a hurry down there lol. Still a bunch of pinko socialists to me. Had to squeeze that one in.
I think Carter did your mom and your mom's sister years ago; you're right, those hunnies are really well worn, uh, traveled.
and the bad news a box o piss is SSUUUPPPERR EXPENSIVE http://www.bobinoz.com/blog/11983/australia-beer-and-tax/ Beer in California then is almost half the price of beer here in Australia. As impressive as that is, with tax on beer in California being so much lower than it is here, you would expect beer there to be even cheaper than it is. Somebody is making much more profit than they are at CUB.
this will serve you well there. look upon aussie-crowd types as opportunitys for a sister introduction. also remember they receive A TON of american culture but relatively few actual americans.
I studied abroad at the university of Sydney when I was a junior in college and absolutely loved it. Surfed 5 days a week at either bondi, manly, or bronte. I lived near the university in Newtown, it would take either 2 buses or a train and bus to get to the beaches. Takes about an hour total but it's not bad at all, never had a problem traveling with my board. Spots were a but crowded but it's still epic. I've been to Auckland too and I don't know of public transport there because I had a van, but I can't reccomend Sydney enough its summer then there and just a great spot to be, I am actually going back next month for 6 months with a working visa. Let me know if you have any questions!
see? he should have bought a car. THATS your meal ticket; crowds a minor problem...how so? the surfers there are in general a little more agressive...at first you won't like this but when you learn some of their tricks you will be proud of yourself and become a more accomplished rider.
Yeah maybe I can rent something once I'm down there. Not sure if its worth actually buying something since I'm only there 4 months. Appreciate it you guys, pretty much committed to OZ at this point. But keep the advice coming...
