    Hey y'all.

I am looking for a new surboard, I am mostly riding a 5'10 retro fish, I don't have the exact quotes in mind right now. The board is really good on small mushy days, it flys down the line but it is not very responsive and it's quite hard to do shaper turns. This is why I would to buy a new board that will work well on smaller days's but will als hold up to head high days that is much more responsive than my fish.

I was thinking of the Mayhem sub driver or the CI dumpster diver. would that be a good choice?

I am 6" and 180 LBS. I would consider myself as an intermediate surfer, I can get speed, do snaps, cut backs, etc.) i mostly surf mushier wave from double over toe to overhead.

Thank you guys in advance for your help.

I would suggest the Driver since the additional R has to add value to the board.

A twin fin retro fish is made for down the line speed (aka pointbreaks). Other than that, search the threads. There are a millions threads on "which board should I get" and "dumpster diver?".

Or has any one tested the sub-scorcher from mayhem?

sub-scorcher and the dumpster diver are really similar boards... essentially the same design with minimal differences

What would be a good size, I thought 6" for the sub driver would do the job?

Would you guys think the sub driver would be a better complement to the fish that the scortcher (too similar)?

At my local shop they are suggesting me to get this timmy Patterson (Model the Stud in 5"11)
Do you guys think that would be a good board?

Stick with the dumpster diver. Works in everything.

i can only speak for the dumpster diver, and i am a big fan. im also 6' and like 185. its the board i ride most. ive had it for three years and am extremely happy with the purchase. i usually end up killing boards that i ride that much, but that thing has held up really well. i find it excels most in waist to chest high surf, but will ride it in knee high (punchy) up to head high and even bigger. once it starts getting real steep you either have to get in early or get your weight on the backfoot to prevent from nosediving the thing. not much rocker to it, but thats the whole point of the board, to be able to surf those standard days. but when its getting steep, im usually riding a standard shortboard anwyay.

But I think I would rather buy a Mayhem board.

    So knowing that I already own a retro fish (5"10) and a standard shortboard (6"2, 18 1/4, 2 1/4)
should I go for the Scortcher or the Sub Driver?
and would 6" be a good size?

Ps Iam 6" and 180 LBS

From what I have read on the internet and heard by friends and in my local shop. I think I will go for the sub driver in 6". I think that this will be the better complement to my fish (5"10, 21", 22 3/4).
This should allow to surf smaller beach breaks but the board should also hold up to overhead.
    have I understood that right?
Would you take it as a thruster? or quad?

Take it in a 5 10 or 5 11 at biggest, pretty sure these boards are supposed to be ridden a little smaller.I'm only a grom so i dont know because everything is shorter. Cisurfboards has a board selector based on volume which is saying your magic number is around 30 L and they say a 5 9 dd. So 5 11 or 6 ft should go good for you. And keep with the classic thruster.

R u a garden gnome? 6 inches is one tiny mother f*cker. At 180 lbs and 6 inches tall u must have an interesting figure.

I can't talk about my sub driver, cause if you and everybody else finds out, then everyone will get one. And if everyone in the world has a lost sub driver that would be really boring for me.

based on your size, i have a couple thoughts to add to this thread.

    1) at 6'0" & 180lbs, your standard shortie is far too low volume for you. the fish is spot on, maybe a touch big, depending on your ability level (which i gather is lower intermediate). you should be somewhere around 30-32L, & that hpsb ain't even close.

    2) based on mayhem's size chart for the sub driver, 6'0" would be ok, but the 6'1" would be better. if you're looking for something as an all-around summer/smaller wave board, you'd be better off w/ a 5'10" dumpster diver, or a 5'11" sub scorcher. more volume, more user-friendly in weaker waves.

    3) remember, foam is your friend. it's better to have too much than too little.

    Hey NJ surfer.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I mostly used my SB when travelling in indo and Australia, I also had a bit better level then.

When the waves are really small and mushy I will mostly use my fish wich is really fun to surf.
an if the wave get a bit steeper then just take the sub diver.
I am kind of affraid of buying a board that is too similar to my fish.

    am I wrong?

you're not wrong, but none of the boards mentioned here are anything remotely like a retro-style fish. they are totally different designs & concepts.
