Ok guys, any tips on how to make me feel better? I haven't been out since late oct and probably won't get back out until early spring when I get my driver's license lol. my parents think it's "cold" and wont bother driving an hour to the shore so I can go have fun. I'm only 16, but it kills me inside when I see killer swells like this past weekend along the east coast and I can only watch them.
Buy a surf stick long board by carve they help alot with balance and with turns always keeps me busy when there isnt wavesor just hop on a bus if your that desperate i used to ride the train 30 min to ac when i was younger
I'm really not a skater type of person lol, when I was younger I was kind of into it but I havent been on a board in years. Going on a bus or the train seems like a good idea, it may be a little odd seeing a kid with maybe a wetsuit on and a board in his hands lol
when you were younger!? lol, listen if you want it go for it. There are far stranger things on a bus than a kid with a surfboard.
i'll take it into consideration, however I normally go to LBI, im like completely familiar in that area and im not sure of any trains or buses going to or even near there thats the problem
get in shape Just get into a good fitness schedule, find a pool, buy an indo-board, and be the strongest surfer you can be when you get back to it in the spring. That way, theres less catch-up work to do and you'll be able to focus on your surfing instead of having to catch your breath. http://www.surfline.com/community/whoknows/whoknows.cfm?id=1169 ^^ Rad Surf-Oriented Swim Workouts
I hate skating this board is way more like surfing check it out I live in AC I walk my ass to the beach through the projects those people just think were nuts and youll be questioned alot but yea i seen way more weird things on a train then me with my surfboard lol oh sometimes i get a surfs up bro from a local gangster but thats it
I have been pushing my parents for a membership to the gym since I can't get a workout without it, and that will be the only way to get in a pool. they keep telling me that its too expensive and such.
well, 1 thing is for sure...you better get yourself a jobby-job...'cause a car, car insurance, gas, food and every other expense driving back and forth will definitely catch up to you...I wish my biggest problem was that I didn't have a car to get to the beach...God, that would be great! ... your a youngin', man...look at the bright side, at least you only live an hour from the beach and your parents are cool enough to take you there...but it all comes back to the dolla dolla bill y'all, so put down that controller and get out and make some bread, otherwise you'll be a 30 year old, living with your parents, without a car and still posting the same thing on here
Definately get an indo board. I got one two winters ago and Ive been using it almost every day since. It might get boring after the first month or so, but there are some cool tricks and exercises you can do to improve your balance, stance, and timing. I also surf in LBI but I'm not sure if there's a bus that stops there. Maybe by Ron Jon? theres a pretty nice sandbar right up the street from the seven eleven. Let me know if you find one that goes through I've been thinking about that
Pull ups!! I feel like I've posted this 1000 times now, but I'll keep saying it because it works. Pull ups! Running and pull ups, with some abs and squats in there, will get you in great shape for surfing. It's not as specific as surfing itself or swimming, but it's damn good. I can give you some specific workouts if you want (just send me a pm and ask), but I came off a 6 month deployment on a navy ship last year in great paddling shape, and I'd credit it all to the pull-ups. Not only does it give you muscular endurance as you increase the reps, but it ads power to your stroke, so you can get more "ummppph" for your buck.
i have a job, its slowly getting me to my own car I have about 2.5k saved up. and my parents aren't cool enough to drive me down unless its sunny and during the summer lol, I need to go by myself. Matt, as of now I dont think I'm really up to taking the train to NY and going solo from there and since Im not familiar with the area right yet. and ND, for sure I will let you know if I spot something, maybe one day we can meet up
coolio, man...don't worry, you'll figure something out...a lot of good advice on this post about working out, you definitely need to be fit, and the more in shape you are, the better your surfing will be...I feel for you, man...I live an hour and a half from the beach and with it getting dark now so damn early it shoots any chance of trying to go out during the week...sucks, but so does life sometimes. Keep your head up, you'll get all the waves you can handle one day!
thanks man I really appreciate the encouraging speech =) I've gotten a few PMs in the past saying I'm still young and I have a hell of a lot ahead of me and Im looking forward to that immensely, I just feell like I cant get enough of it now lol
i used to scrounge rides,part-way rides, walk miles and even hitchhike, not that i'm recommending that, leave a board in an outside shower at the beach and take the train.how much do you want to surf? skating is the only substitute,or perhaps snowboard, but i've never done it.get a ride to the beach and surf
dude im in the same exact position. 16 years old, my parents think its much too cold and i get my license in may. F*CKING MAY. haha im gonna get an old school dancer by longboard larry. since i brought that board up does anyone have a review on these things?
save money, get your license, buy a car, drive to the beach... Every teenage surfer living a bit inland goes through the same thing... Getting my car in high school, felt like freedom...
