What's your reflection of this summer? I thought it was pretty great.. waves could have been better but we did have a few good days and great weather! Hopefully my dream of having head high waves more than 3 times will come true next summer though!
im going to have to say last summer was better. we had more hurricanes (during the summer i mean) and there were a few swells before that that were pretty good. this summer we only had one or two good swells before hurricane season, and even those only lasted about half a day depending on where you were
After being away for awhile and coming back to the East coast for June and July, all I can say is thank God for disk golf, beer, and cookouts. But besides what we all already know I made the most of those few odd days and the two or three swells through travel and loooong sessions.... it kept me hungry but happy.
this whole island was the worst summer ever for surfing in the memories of the oldest, longest surfing surfers unanimously.i'm 35 straght years at this beach and the other than this 34 were easily 100 times better.it's usually good here in the summer
worst summer i ever experienced. THE ONLY reason your saying it wasn't so bad was because of the run we have been having now. but once it's september i label it fall. worst summer ever
I haven't surfed as long as some of you, but I thought it was OK. I think only once was there more than a 4 or 5 day stretch where I didn't go out and at least catch a few decent rides. Sometimes small lapses in waves are good (can catch up on work and get ready for the next good days). I had a lot of good days in OBX this year as well. The only thing that blows my mind about this summer is how f'ing fast it went by!
end of July into August there were a few good days, nothing spectacular, but fun, nonetheless. The tropics have become unfavorable for storm development, but it may change and give us something in October. I was really looking forward to a kicka$$ hurricane season. I'm hoping Irene and Katia are not the only good swells we see this year.
I wouldn't say worst summer ever, not even close. We still got some good swells later in the summer. But definitely not as good as last year. And I'm talking calendar summer, mid-June to to mid-September so I'm counting Irene and Katia. It was definitely one of the flattest July that I can remember though.
I surfed a lot this summer. You had to be on it at the right tide and sandbar to get anything and have the flexability to do it. Anyone who doesn't live or work right on the beach would have missed 90% of the ridable waves since they only lasted about an hour or two before the wind picked up and ruined the fragile little lines. Trying to plan for all but a handfull of days this summer was impossible. As for size, there were only 3 days I can remember that touched chest high and all those other days were knee to thigh high at best.
3 days of chest high all summer, and a ton of tiny "fragile" little knee high lines that lasted an hour or two at low tide, was to me pretty much as bad a summer as I can remember.
That was my recollection. I remember two really fun "chest" high days at Assateague with 200 of my closest friends at 6am. Thank God for the ORV pass. The rest of the summer I spent fishing. Sandbars in OCMD were non-existant. Shorebreak everywhere. Love the fall.
Summer '11 = Weak Sauce The Katia swell was pretty much the only waves worth mentioning since May on the OBX.
