    Noobs view

What has worked for me is punching through the white water or doing the push up and let the water run through. I ride a 9' x 21" x 2.5" little on the sleek side for a longboard. I'm trying to duck dive too but its very tiring after a few consecutive tries..turtling works best for me right now in the stomach high range. But I've only had to turtle up once in the last month or so, I think it was in early June where VABeach had some nice surf from a low that formed off the coast.

Good question though, I was able to get some useful info from the responses...

Trying to duckdive on a log is cool if you like getting slammed into the sand... In bigger surf the "thunder down under" is probably the easiest way to get past the breaking waves without losing too much forward momentum.
It's easy, Loggerhead hit it on the nose. I turtle in all size waves, its fun and when people think that you're a kook they usually stay the #### away from you.. Just a bonus

Its interesting to see how everyone manages to paddle out in bigger surf. We all have our own techniques and i am excited to try some when we get some surf again. I think i can safely say there arnt a heck of alot of girls on here, but some, like myself, may just read what they want and not post often (if at all)? you guys all crack me up for some of the stuff that is said on here. Entertaining to say the least :)

I think the best way would be to just observe what the other long boarders out there with you are doing and try to copy or just ask for some tips.

Where I surf, we usually just roll off the board into the water, grab hold of the leash (in case anyones behind ya) and dive under the wave. Seems to work fine for us.

I have seen some of the bigger guys duck dive the long boards by tilting the board to one side. The guy in this video seems to have it right:

Hope you figure out what works best for you dude & don't give up

Reading these posts leaves me confused about turning turtle, thunder down under . . . I was going to say the Eskimo thing, but I'm just not Inuit (joke, get it, in-to-it . . . in - u - it. . . ) Anyway, I learned in overhead Guiones surf, and was taught to hug the board to my bod while the wave washes over me. Then I see we've got a senior member here, who seems like a reliable source, suggesting that you let your body hang perpendicular to the board, like an anchor. All I know is that being in between those two postures has NEVER worked well for me . . . oh, 9'4" x 22.75 x 2.75 Tim Nolte HPLB and I'm 6' 160 lbs. Is there a consensus as to what a real eskimo, or turtle, or aussie would do?

I hang under the board; the trick is the roll over so you are paddling again soon. Or find a rip.

You're right, making every effort to control the board than allow it to go flying in the face of other paddlers

You nailed it on your first post ;)

Works for me as well, trying to duck dive a large board in big surf isn't worth it, it's a good way to get launched backwards and take several on the head
