Well, I like Phillip Roth so I would recommend Goodbye Columbus.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a great book, both from an historical perspective and the lessons it teaches about corporate greed.

Snow falling on Cedars- Basically two stories in one, A court case trying to solve a murder mystery, and flashbacks on the main character's love affairs with this girl.

The Jungle is a must read, whether it's required or not. Just a great book all around.
A Lesson Before Dying was my required reading before freshman year of high school, and it was actually a quick and interesting read. Makes you think about the death penalty in a different light.

Asking for suggestions on literature in a surf forum??? That's like looking for dental advice at a NASCAR event.

whatever happened to just being "American"? Try "The First Man in Rome" by Collen McCollough. I've never heard of any of those books besides "The Jungle", new doesn't always equal good.
