So, summer is kinda kicking in and I was wondering what everyone does when surf is at a very minimal size or nothing at all. Just trying to get into the water as much as possible this summer.

Take up SCUBA--you will then be "in the water".....

I work, fish and sleep. Honestly its never been all that bad on Delmarva that I can remember. If you live close the constant south flow throws something ridable a couple times a week if you play the tides. To get these little windows you need to be right there when it happens, they dont show up on the forecasts.

    Great question.

I've stocked up for these situations over the last few years. I have a SUP and a prone paddleboard, so going for a long paddle is always an option. Today I threw some swim fins and mask in the car to go for a swim after work.

If you want to get wet, you gotta have options. Any kind of swimming or paddling is going to pay dividends when the surf eventually gets good again. I don't know that the vis is good enough to spear around here.

A Beater is a great alternative for marginal summer days. If I really wanna get wet on a hot day I'll take mine out and play around a bit. I can actually surf it pretty good now in the weakest of shorebreak. Other than that, I do a lot of water photography, fishing and swimming to stay in good surfing shape. SUPing the sound is fun too.

Spanking the monkey is also always an option.

Indeed. Summer is an excellent time to plot sand trajectories and locate the gullies. Just make sure you only do it during the hours the lifeguards are on duty.

Skimboard, especially when I'm up in Delaware, 1-2 feet is all you need for some fun lines. Other than that, work out. Trying to get up to 180 but we'll see how that goes this summer. Anyone have any good lifting regimens for someone with only dumbbells?

Big weights = big muscles. If you don't have a full set of dumbbells going to at least 100 lbs, your goals may be difficult to achieve (unless you're Herschel Walker).

Also, don't go overboard on protein. You need calories to grow, to include carbs (the good kind).

Careful with bulking up though, it generally isn't good for surfing. I use to lift weights but pretty much gave it up and do other things to combat the beer gut. Lean muscles are better for surfing IMO. Not that i'm very lean lol

I hear that, my carbs mostly come from lots of oatmeal and simple sugars but I have to eat a ton to keep up. I'm starting a creatine supplement as well this week. The problem is just eating enough. Often times I'll go 5 hours + without eating just because of work and that'll really put me behind on the calories.

Well I'm 160, 5 11" so I've got plenty of room for a lil weight gain haha, I'm sure I can be a lean 170 at the least.

My normal routine, just more of non-surfing stuff than if I was surfing

Plenty of aerobic weights & 1 day swimming (to be able to maintain on hard days)

1 day a week of anaerobic weights & 2 of swimming..... a day of recov w/vinyasa yoga...maybe a yog, by I hate yogging

Good form and diet is more important than big weights. You don't need 100 lb dumbbells...
