I was out on Sunday sitting on my board, and something big came up and bumped my leg, as quick as I turned to see what it was, it was gone....thinking it was a porpoise...freaked me the hell out!

i was out in brigantine on sunday morning and there were a ton of dolphins out i probably saw about 15 within an hour around the lineup. i was paddling for a wave and saw something out of the corner of my eye and it was a dolphin riding the wave i was going for, really cool to see. they were coming super close, a group of 3 came about 10 feet away at one point. made me jump at first before i realized they were dolphins but it was awesome to watch them

I live in New Smyrna and my foot seems to hit something at least once a week.

i was in brig years ago. I saw a pod about 25 yards away, and I started making squeaky noises on my board with my fingers. one surfaced 10 feet away and nearly sh*t my shorts...

They always bump first, just before the attack. It's a curiousity thingie.

Seriously? Dolphins freak you out? I must see 15-20 every time I paddle out (VB north end). Crazy breaching action every day. Love it!

yeah there have been a lot of dolphins this fall. i was surfing about 2 weeks ago when a HUGE pod came through. there were probably 100+ and just kept coming for about an hour and a half. when the first couple came through, i heard the water shoot from one's "spout" (dont know the proper name) and it freaked the hell out of me. when a stream of water shoots up 10 feet away from you its scary as hell

I agree, they can freak you out (mostly due to their size)...esp when they first appear.
Ever have one cut you off? It frustrating as hell and beautiful all at once.

Damn, Sandbridge VA does not have much luck this millenium. I mean, all the shark data is always very random, but two of the 4 shark attacks in VA history both took places within two blocks of each other in Sandbridge, and if I remember correctly, the fatal shark attack back in 01 was in september as well.... Im just saying....

    You know.....

The last two fatal white shark attacks in SD both fell with-in a week of each other on seperate calendar years.... Interesting....

Only place i ever seen a shark was north end brig. Outer sandbar on a smaller day, i was riding a friends longboard and seen the fin pop up 20 ft from me, then i saw the tail, he was just cruising southward toward ac. Kinda scared me a bit, i paddled in.

Probably a dolphin as others have already mentioned they bump you to see what you are. Back in June I did have a sand shark bump me and I'm pretty sure I had my foot resting on one for a second and felt it squirm away, but they were kinda common at the time. I knew it was a shark as a friend of mine that was out there with me, got bumped as well and there were definately no dolphin in the lineup. Little guys were slammin into your leg pretty hard too, kinda hurt a bit lol.

I surfed north obx wed-sat and got bumped each day!! Once sitting on board (scared the xxx out of me and I fell off board...LOL) and twice walking out in waist deep water. Whatever it was kind of bumped/swam between my legs. Fish felt mid size and had bumping power. Water was chocolate brown and murky from Igor. Alot of small bait fish on top of the water, jumping squiming from predators. My brother had a baitfish jump on his board. Something was chasing them. Alot of pelicans and seabirds also.

Dolphins were on patrol but 100 yards out past the outside break, so I do not think it was dolphins.

We were at Northside @ IRI on the Sat. Earl blew through and a pair of dolphin's broke surface 15' from us. We all looked at each other glad they were dolphin's as I always keep an eye on baitfish when they move on the surface something bigger is under them chasing them for a meal.
