So let me start off first by saying not all SUPs are kooks because that would be quite ignorant to say, but they hold the majority kook population. Today at my local break it was quite fun, 2-3+ clean groundswell. I was the only one out for about an hour and a half, and then... this guy shows up on the beach with a paddle in his hand and giant board on his head. All i am thinking to myself is "please don't paddle out right next to me". Oddly enough he does so.. Sets were spread out a bit so by the time they came i was dying to take one. I paddled into this one right the the peak, perfect set-up and guess who decides to hop aboard the kook wagon and drop in? Thats right the sup. Next thing i know he throws his paddle back which slaps me in the face and I ate complete ****. I asked him kindly to go somewhere else, and whadda know he asks me why I dropped in on him... I was so shocked. Anybody else wanna share some funny stories pls go ahead.

So you were already in the wave closer to the peak and he shoulder hopped right? If so that is fuked up for sure. I would have beat him with his own paddle.

My problem with SUP isn't a kook problem. For the most part my issue is with guys who can surf taking the fvking things out into a lineup of surfers and being complete d-bags on them. They don't belong anywhere near surfers. Its a big ocean.

This is why regulating through violence is sometimes a necessary evil. Also in my opinion SUP's should only be used for surfing in Hawaii where they dig that sh!t, otherwise go paddle in the bay or river for a workout or go fish off that thing. I have one and I would never surf on it. Surfing on it is boring and holding the paddle is annoying, it makes catching waves non-challenging. When I got it i surfed it once in the middle of the winter when no one was out and was over surfing on it for good.

SUPs get a pass from me only when ridden by older ex-surfers (ie, no longer can surf due to back issues) who ride them well, can handle them safely and aren't wave hogs. Everyone else should ride a surfboard or gtf away from the lineup.

The old guy with a bad back would be the only real exception providing he didn't take it into a crowd or a peak with more surfers than set waves.

A good SUP brings beer and snacks to the line up!

Great points Gaff. I agree it all comes down to control over your equipment and SUP's are very hard to hang on to in a wipeout. I have only ridden them in canals and lakes but I would bet if falling I too would hold tight to the paddle and not catch the board which like you said causes a danger radius of about 20ft.

most of the time around here people on them suck at riding them. Plain and simple. They get in the way and are annoying with them. Most people around here don't respect a lineup with SUP's.

That said I've seen guys do things on them that I thought weren't possible. Get really deep in the barrel, do airs, etc.

    Whats sup?

My first encounter with a SUP was a few years ago, in the summer, when we actually used to get surf in the summer.....anyway, it was a nice day of thigh-waist medium period waves, and I'm waiting my turn, then when I see a peak heading my way, I start to go for it, it was a right, so I glance to my left just before I take off, and there's this geezer on a SUP, who shoulder hopped way down the line, so I backed off, 'cause I didn't want to be run over by a 12' canoe. And like that's not bad enough, he rides on by, waving the paddle over his head, yelling "woo hoo".

Yeah, so it makes me cringe to see somebody paddling out on one of those things.

Gaff dropping science. The only time I ever had words, that I initiated at least, was with an incompetent SUPr.

But if it's appropriate and competent I'm ok w it, and I love you Cdog.

Eventually SUP'S will have to be seperated from surfers. Its gonna get ugly at somepoint in the next decade or two and each beach will have to have designated SUP areas.

I try to be civil, but always mock the SUP bastards until they move, or just drop in anyway. Most people cannot turn the boards anyway so I take the wave over with my 9' tri-fin and push them off.

This video is the future of SUPS vs. Surfers...

Just realized they are talking about Ken Bradshaw - Awesome!!!
