Contrary to what these guys believe, SUP is NOT surfing.
Just because you are standing on a board doesn't mean you are surfing.
It's paddle-boarding, not surfing. I put it in the same category as windsailing, kayaking, or even canoeing. Not surfing.
Neither has a place in a surf lineup.

Like TLC said: Please stick to the rivers and lakes that your used to.

A SUP is nothing more than a "Twat yacht".

If a frog had wings it wouldn't bump it's ass when he hopped...

See, I debated on posting what I posted because I knew what the response would be and didn't really want to get into it with you, because you and I have been "cool" for some time and have had many a PM convo's and all that good stuff but anybody who knows me (really knows me) knows that I speak the truth and "keep it real" no matter who it is, even if it's a friend or family member and even if it hurts (the truth usually does). Sometimes things just need to be said.

Now, don't get it twisted... the point of my post was not to make you feel bad. I never once said you were at fault and I don't want you to feel any worse about the situation than you already do, because I believe you genuinely felt bad about it, even if you did nothing wrong. But it still happened none-the-less right? So my only point I was trying to get across, which probably didn't get received the way it should of, was that you are probably the last person who should be casting stones right now. Sure, you learned a valuable lesson that day and are probably scarred for life mentally and you will be more careful and make different decisions in the future but in other words, hindsight is 20/20.

Look Zach (since we're name dropping), I like you and don't want this to burn any bridges between us so try not to take what I say too much to heart if that's what's going on here. No need to let everybody know that we are of the same age but you've been surfing since you were in diapers and I have not. I thought I made it very clear that you are the more experience and skilled surfer here.

And for the record, I didn't start surfing 4 years ago, I just got 100% committed around that time. I've owned a surfboard and have been surfing ever since I was 14-15 years old. Sure, many of those years were spent being a novice (or kook w/e you wanna call it), but I logged plenty of water time through those years so that when I got committed 4 years ago it wasn't as if it was new to me, I just hadn't progressed in the skill department much at that stage. But I personally have never injured another person in the water in all those years either, and granted in that same time you logged hundreds more hours of surf than I did, so I understand your point that when you've logged as much time in the water as you that it inevitably will happen (although it took 30yrs for you) but let's not suggest I only have 4 years of experience in the water with a surfboard, cause that's just not true.

Lastly, i'm not sticking up for SUP'ers, because I too have had my own problems with them and have posted about them before, but I'm not going to write off every person who rides one just because of a few J-offs. I take everybody on case-by-case basis.

Moral of the story? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. That's all i'm saying here and I think you know that and saw my point, so my apologies if you took offense. I meant it in more of a brotherly love kind of way. Sometimes I don't articulate what I mean as well as I should, and for that I can come off as a d*ck but know that's not my intentions. For what it's worth...

Once I was surfing a out of the way spot and it was just me and a buddy. it was a chest high and kinda rough with a drift. walking back up to a jetty for another drift when a SUP'r who im guessing paddled from the nearest parking lot (pretty far away) drifts up and paddle into a corkscrewing dedging bomb and ditches the board right into the jetty. the board washes up becuase the guy had no leash. when the guy gets to it he comes to us and asks to borrow one of our leashes. We tell him that as they are about 6 ft it might not be a good idea. He offers to buy one of them and takes a soaked roll of money out of the pocket of his shorts.

We were in the middle of nowhere no food stands nothing. why did he think he needed money? any way he starts to paddle back the way he came but can't beat the current. he had to walk that thing miles in deep sand.

Another time another buddy and I were surfing some shore break death bombs. We see this SUP'r see we are getting some waves and paddles from outside in between us and strokes into a wave only to get destroyed. when he collects himself and gets back out my friend off handedly says that his board might be like 7 ft to big for that. The SUP'r calls my friend an idiot and paddles away.

I should say that out in montauk there is a guy who rips on one of those things. And everytime a surf a spot known for SUPS they always take off so outside and far from the pocket you can just take off behind them and have the wave to your self and never catch up to them. they never cut back. and when the waves gets to steep they kick out.

Last hurricane swell this season I was paddling back out, tired, and trying to get through some long period mush. There were two guys paddle boarding near me, and they had no idea how to get those monsters out through the breaks. The one guy let go of his board while I was duck diving, and I emerged to have a SUP slam on my skull. I was pretty pissed off, but the guy was sincere with his apology. He wasn't a horrible kook, and was decent on the wave face. I just don't think he had experience paddling out in chest to head sets with an SUP. It is pretty intense for me as well, even with a short board. However, I know my limits and don't position myself in a way that I could mess up and hurt someone. FYI, I still don't hate SUPs. Many of the great surfers in this area own them and know how to handle them in all conditions. Blame the person, not the equipment.

laird hamilton and sups rule. They are way harder to ride and all around better than surf boards. I think as many kooks should ride them in as many crowded surf line ups as possible, and always drop in on people and kick out their boards at the end with no leash on.

Yes I own one I can surf it fluently and was able to immediately the day I bought it it. Catching waves is easy there is no hop up to time just a paddle into position and you can see the wave coming a long way off it sucks. Also the paddle is annoying to hold. I drilled holes in that piece of sh!t bolted a cooler with fishing rod holders on it to the front of it and its fun to fish off it. Its a pretty good workout paddling it upstream in rivers which I do occasionally and then fish on the drift back down. Surfing those hunks of crap is lame and for trendy idiot kooks. And btw I know Laird does it and he rips but who cares, f him.
