leetymike, I check buoy data like I was the KGB. I check offshore buoys as well as the ones closer so I can see what's coming from different directions at different times. Some show better days than others. I watch average wave period more than I watch dominant period. What are your thoughts on that?

Thats good. The more you look into those and start to put together what they are saying matched with what the waves/conditions were, the ore ocean savvy you will become, and you'll start to notice you score way more than the guy who just looks at the surf forecasting sites.

In all honesty, i hardly check them any more. I check the wind from my yard, and call my buddy who lives by the beach. Although if he doesn't answer then i pop over to the buoy. Which is broken at the moment. But yeah i have the whole island surrounded by bookmarked buoys, so i can see whats coming in all directions at the click of a mouse.

But when it comes to the average vs. dominant, it just depends if i need that extra little motivation to head out, then i'll check the dominant. Its the stand out, so it usually makes it sound bigger.

I'll 2nd DawnPatrol. The only "app" I can think of would involve session sharing / personal reporting. I've been skunked by Surfline, SwellInfo, MSW, you name it but usually I trust my friends when they say it's firing or it's crap. No website or tracking methods are 100% accurate, plus some qualitative observations wouldn't hurt either. I've surfed super fun "3-4+ Fair" and poop "3-4+ Fair"

You "applaud the guy" for essentially wanting to make it easier for hordes to glance at their idiot phones & say oh it's green today, I'm going surfing.....?

Coupla years ago, NPS at AI was forced to install a barrier gate to limit the amount of off-road vehicles on the wild side. When the 144 rig limit is reached, the policy is that one vehicle must depart the OSV before another can enter the OSV area. There are now two rangers stationed at that gate every weekend morning & all day to keep frustrated 4wd loads of people from roaring around the barrier & through the fragile dunes. The line of simmering rigs, most of 'em bearing longboards, foamies & SUPs, sometimes extends back 2 miles by 8am on a summer morning. This is directly linked to the popularity of websites that predict conditions.

    1. WTF is wrong with you: the breaks already jam up every time SI goes green or Surfline issues their alerts; this aspect has become super-evident this year. We don't need MORE of this crowding due to 'surfers' looking at their iTurds & loading up the Range Rovers for beach treks.
    2. gitcarter knows what he's talking about; maybe you just don't like pepperoni....??
    3. I must say, I'm in awe of carter because he got Simod to agree with the sentiment of shoving pepperoni up that kid's bunghole. This has to be a first on SI Forum. (Admin agreeing with a candidate for HOTY, not the pepperoni thing.)

Thanks Yankee. I was going to reply to aquad!ck but you said it perfectly. And yeah I am blown away that SIAdmin agreeded with me:cool:!!!

And just to add Aquad!ck I am quite sure the OP is not talking about something that uses forecast models to predict waves like SI does, he said it would scan other forecasts and give you an alert to which break is best. That clearly shows he just wants to make something that summarizes other peoples work then drops a little pin on your damn map and tells you how to get there and where to get a $20 Latte and your butthole bleached like all the little pampered douche canoe kids do these days!

It really is fantastic when it catches on...I like the Liam take offs. We discuss banners quite frequently in the south coast line-ups, among many other great concepts birthed here.

its awesome when the line up just ****s around the whole session. Its been tense the past few swells.

Do they make an app for that? How bout an app that tells me how far i might have to walk through the parking lot to check the waves? Or one that lets me know when i need a new board? or one that tells me what music goes best with my session? or one that lets me know if there is room to fly my banner?

**** apps. Its sad how often people glue themselves to their phones for everything.

Word, on all of that. I don't know why but a couple of my buddies and I(South park fans), also yell piss/piss out my a$$ to call each other off waves...don't worry, not in front of the children.

I like this idea about surf cams.... if your in jersey I say do it cause a lot of jerseys cames hit the bucket when sandy came charging on through. I feel like this has some potential as long as you don't use no sh**ty a** cams

Yep, cep had a great idea. OP, get on that ****. I would also be down for having a few weather stations added. Around my area, we lost the only weather station with real time data near my break. And the wind can be very different just across the bridge.

Terrible idea. We need less technology in general but more specifically in surfing. Sure the advancements we have made are incredible, especially in board design, but there's a limit. Drones flying over breaks, kids with go pros hanging out of there mouths, wavejets, apps that tell you when to surf... There is a certain rawness that I love about surfing. All these gadgets and gizmos takes away from that rawness. It's sad really. That's one of the reasons I enjoy surfing in the winter.

Imagine if forecasts only posted data and didn't use a dumbie system of colors or ratings or whatever. And people had to put the data together themselves, like allot of us do already. Imagine how much les crowded it would be when people have to use there brain just a little
