So I've been sorta "surfing" for about a year with no real success, probably due to my lack of consistency of water time and also because i mainly surf alone with no guidance. So my question would be is there anything besides more time in the water that may help me get better?

Off water training.is one thing not mentioned a lot but makes a big difference.... Better bigger board? Better surf break/waves? Better rash guard shirt(style gives you confidence)

^^^ +swimming...over the course of just about two years i've surfed 1-10+ ft any season (only beach breaks tough, not heavy pitching barrels like some of these dudes on here)...gone from my dependable 7'6" with lots a float to a 6'4" with not a ton of hassle stepping down, and gone from pushing to the beach to going down the line (that took bigger, better fall waves & 3 months to finally "get") then getting solid bottom turns, then going bottom to top repeatedly, making late drops, doing some cut backs (on the 6'4" - but i ain't hacking yet), and the occasional floater

this took multiple sessions and good fitness...above all though, i'd place what i'd call a pretty solid progression through the basics (so i'd say i'm on the verge of going from beginner to intermediate - i still give waves away on the reg) on having a ton of respect, but not a lot of fear of any aquatic situation. been swimming since i was born, and am 100% confident in my ability as well as judging a situation and whether or not i have the ability (swimming, surfing, or otherwise) to be competent in it...

this is all in context though...if i was in some of the places/conditions that these dudes talk about like 23' at belmar i'd probably have a different opinion and experience

swim though... 25 yards or meters, 50 meters, open water, all strokes, top of water or underwater, everywhere...that's my best advice

    wayne will teach you.

    this is your hello thread.

the best way to learn to surf is to paddle out like four or five hundred yards, and then drown yourself.

welcome to swell info. may the hate be forever on your side.

now seriously go drown yourself in your own semen kook.

Lose the mindset of " getting better" as your goal. There is no goal. Just get in the water and go surfing.--- Yoda

Hello threade??!!?? Who are you, where do you surf, what do you right, can your girlfriend or boyfriend cook, do you bench?

Water time in all conditions, learn what the ocean is doing. Watch other people and their techniques, how they drop in, how they stand up, when they stand up, etc. good luck

A balance board of some sort (indo board or even pvc pipe and plywood), skateboarding (carver boards are the best cross trainer) shoulder exercises to help w/ paddling, rotational exercises to help w/ carving, and look up wear ups or stretches to help. Good luck!

one year is not enough. You need to stick with it through good and bad to see the fruits of your labor.

Watch surf videos. Not just pros ripping, also just regular dudes.

    Water time.

Stay off the forum. Jk. But really get out and go surfing.

    Surf in crowds and watch.
